Redox reactions move electrons through metabolic pathways in cells. Oxidation is the loss of electrons, and reduction is the gain of electrons. These two steps happen together, which keeps electron flow moving through metabolism.

A clear example appears in bacterial metabolism. Glucose is oxidized to carbon dioxide, while oxygen is reduced to water. This shows how one molecule loses electrons as another gains them.

Cells use special electron carriers to make these transfers happen. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, flavin adenine dinucleotide, or FAD, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, or NADP+, are key cofactors. They shuttle electrons during redox reactions and help keep metabolism balanced.

In catabolic pathways, such as cellular respiration, NAD+ and FAD act as main electron acceptors. NAD+ accepts two electrons and one proton to become NADH. FAD accepts two electrons and two protons to become FADH2. These reduced forms then pass high-energy electrons to the electron transport chain, which helps drive ATP production.

NADP+ has a different role in anabolic pathways, such as fatty acid synthesis and photosynthesis. When NADP+ gains electrons, it becomes NADPH. NADPH then donates electrons in biosynthetic reactions, which helps build complex molecules from simpler ones.

These carriers keep cycling between oxidized and reduced states. That recycling keeps them available for later reactions. The balance between oxidation and reduction supports cellular homeostasis, metabolic flexibility, and responses to changing conditions.
