Trapezoidal Method

The trapezoidal method is a numerical integration technique that estimates the area under a curve when data are available at discrete points rather than as a continuous equation. It divides adjacent measurements into intervals and approximates each interval as a trapezoid, calculating its area from the interval width and the average of the two endpoint values. In clinical research, this approach commonly estimates area under the concentration-time curve in pharmacokinetic studies, supporting assessment of drug exposure and comparisons among treatments. It can also summarize other time-dependent clinical measurements, although accuracy depends on sampling frequency and how well the data capture changes between observations.

Trapezoidal Rule

2026

Estimating the distance traveled by a vehicle using its recorded velocity over time is a common problem in physics and engineering. When velocity data is available at discrete time intervals, rather than as a continuous function, numerical integration methods such as the trapezoidal rule are often employed to approximate the total displacement. The trapezoidal rule works by dividing the total time interval into several equal segments. Within each segment, the recorded velocities at the endpoints...

Methods of Sterilization I: Physical Methods

As used in a healthcare facility, sterilization destroys all microorganisms through physical or chemical methods. The physical method includes steam, dry heat, boiling water, and radiation. Steam sterilization uses non-toxic, low-cost moist heat in the form of saturated steam under pressure, which is fast, microbicidal, and sporicidal, and quickly warms and penetrates fabrics. Autoclaves, or steam sterilizers, expose each item to direct steam contact for a predetermined time at the necessary...
