Facial Landmark Detection

Facial landmark detection is a computer vision technique that identifies consistent anatomical points on a face, such as the eye corners, nose tip, mouth, and jawline, to represent facial geometry numerically. In an image or video frame, a trained model analyzes visual features and predicts landmark coordinates, often using regression or neural-network methods; these points can then be tracked across frames to measure movement and alignment. In engineering, the resulting geometric representation supports face alignment, expression analysis, augmented-reality effects, human-computer interaction, and image-based research. Accuracy depends on factors such as pose, lighting, occlusion, and image resolution.

Source: Olmstead, D. N., et al., Facial Nerve Axotomy in Mice: A Model to Study Motoneuron Response to Injury. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates the facial nerve crush procedure in a mouse, where blunt dissection through key landmarks exposes the facial nerve trunk at the stylomastoid foramen. Forceps are then used to compress the nerve trunk, inducing axonal damage and disrupting neuronal signal transmission.

Endobronchial ultrasound-guided sampling using transbronchial needle aspiration plays a key role in staging and diagnosing lung cancer. We propose a systematic stepwise approach dividing the procedure into six landmarks that should be taught to new operators.
