Tilapia Farming

Tilapia farming is the controlled production of tilapia for food, research, and aquaculture development, with genetics shaping growth, survival, reproduction, and product quality. Farmers improve stocks through selective breeding, choosing broodfish with desirable traits and propagating their offspring under managed culture conditions; genetic evaluation can also help maintain diversity and limit inbreeding. Genetic approaches support the development of fast-growing, disease-tolerant, environmentally adaptable lines and can inform strategies for managing sex ratios, since males often grow more uniformly in culture. Applying genetics to tilapia farming increases production efficiency while supporting healthier stocks, responsible resource use, and long-term aquaculture sustainability.
