Symptom Surveillance

Symptom surveillance is the systematic collection and analysis of reported or observed symptoms to identify changes in individual health or population-level disease patterns. In medicine, it combines patient reports, clinical observations, health records, or digital monitoring with time-based comparison and signal detection, allowing unusual increases, symptom clusters, or worsening conditions to prompt further assessment. This approach supports early recognition of infectious disease outbreaks, adverse treatment effects, and emerging health threats while helping clinicians monitor chronic conditions and prioritize care. By converting symptom data into actionable evidence, symptom surveillance strengthens clinical decision-making, public health response, and ongoing evaluation of medical interventions.

Immune surveillance is an integral part of the innate immune system, involving the continuous monitoring of peripheral tissues to detect and respond to pathogens, infected cells, or cancerous cells. This surveillance is conducted primarily by natural killer (NK) cells and phagocytes, which employ distinct but complementary mechanisms to identify and eliminate threats. Natural Killer Cells: The Fast Responders NK cells are large granular lymphocytes found in the blood and lymphatic system. These...
