Afferent Fiber

An afferent fiber is a nerve fiber that carries sensory information from receptors in the body toward the central nervous system, enabling the brain and spinal cord to detect internal and external conditions. When a stimulus activates a receptor, it is converted into electrical signals that travel along the fiber through peripheral nerves to the spinal cord or brain, where the information is processed. Afferent fibers convey modalities such as touch, pain, temperature, and proprioception, and can participate in rapid spinal reflexes. Understanding their organization supports research on sensation, neural circuits, pain mechanisms, and neurological disorders.

2017

Abnormal sensory function underlies visceral pain and other symptoms of functional and inflammatory bowel diseases. A protocol for the electrophysiological recording of the colonic afferent nerves in an ex vivo rat colorectum preparation is presented here.

In Vitro Recording of Mesenteric Afferent Nerve Activity in Mouse Jejunal and Colonic Segments

Mesenteric afferent nerves convey information from the gastrointestinal tract towards the brain regarding normal homeostasis as well as pathophysiology. Gastrointestinal afferent nerve activity can be assessed by mounting isolated intestinal segments with attached afferent nerves into an organ bath, isolating the nerve, and assessing basal as well as stimulated activity.

This video demonstrates the recording of electrical signals from the afferent neurons in a paralyzed zebrafish larva by positioning a micropipette near the lateral line ganglion and forming a loose seal for signal capture. The extracellular solution maintains neuronal viability during this process.
