Cell Dynamics

Cell dynamics refers to the continual changes in cell structure, movement, signaling, and internal organization that allow cells to respond to their environment. These changes arise through coordinated activity of the cytoskeleton, cell membrane, organelles, and signaling pathways, which regulate processes such as migration, growth, division, and synaptic remodeling. In neuroscience, studying cell dynamics helps explain how neurons extend axons, form and adjust synaptic connections, transport materials, and respond to injury or disease. Imaging, molecular labeling, and live-cell analysis reveal these processes over time, linking cellular behavior to neural development, circuit function, and potential therapeutic strategies.

Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy is a powerful approach to observe structures close to the cell surface at high contrast and temporal resolution. We demonstrate how TIRF can be employed to study protein dynamics at the cortex of cell wall-enclosed bacterial and fungal cells.

Herein we describe two approaches to characterize cell polarization events in B lymphocytes during the formation of an IS. The first, involves quantification of organelle recruitment and cytoskeleton rearrangements at the synaptic membrane. The second is a biochemical approach, to characterize changes in composition of the centrosome, which undergoes polarization to the immune synapse.

In this protocol, we present the experimental procedures of a cell spreading assay that is based on live-cell microscopy. We provide an open-source computational tool for the unbiased segmentation of fluorescently labeled cells and quantitative analysis of lamellipodia dynamics during cell spreading.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...
