Regional Cerebral Uptake

Regional Cerebral Uptake is the measurement of how substances such as glucose, oxygen, or imaging tracers are taken up and distributed across distinct brain regions. This regional pattern matters because it reflects differences in cerebral blood flow, metabolism, transport, or molecular binding. In practice, researchers administer or detect a measurable substance and quantify its accumulation with methods such as positron emission tomography or related imaging approaches, allowing uptake to be compared between regions and experimental conditions. These measurements support studies of neural function, brain disorders, pharmacological effects, and treatment responses.

Small-animal positron emission tomography enables the assessment of the brain's two main energy substrates: glucose and ketones. In the present method, 11C-acetoacetate and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose are injected sequentially in each animal, and their uptake is measured quantitatively in specific brain regions determined from the magnetic resonance images.

2025

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique for estimating amino acid uptake by bone marrow-derived stromal cells. Na+-dependent amino acid transporters mediate the uptake of radiolabeled amino acids inside the cells, and the cellular uptake is estimated by measuring the radioactivity.

Protein synthesis is a critical biological process for cells. In brain, it is required for adaptive changes. Measurement of rates of protein synthesis in the intact brain requires careful methodological considerations. Here we present the L-[1-14C]-leucine quantitative autoradiographic method for determination of regional rates of cerebral protein synthesis in vivo.

Extracellular Vesicle Uptake Assay: A Method to Visualize and Quantify Cellular Uptake of Extracellular Vesicles Using 3D Fluorescence Imaging Technique
