Fibular Osteotomy

Fibular osteotomy is a surgical procedure that cuts and repositions or removes part of the fibula, the slender lateral bone of the lower leg, to correct alignment or support orthopedic treatment. By changing the shape or length of the fibula and stabilizing the altered bone with fixation when needed, surgeons can modify ankle mechanics, lower-leg loading, or access adjacent structures. The procedure is used in deformity correction, ankle reconstruction, and selected tibial or knee operations, while its effects on joint stability and gait can inform studies of movement behavior and functional recovery.

Source: Dalkin, W., et al. The Fibular Nerve Injury Method: A Reliable Assay to Identify and Test Factors That Repair Neuromuscular Junctions. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates a surgical procedure to induce fibular nerve injury in a mouse to study neuromuscular junction (NMJ) regeneration. The procedure involves exposing the fibular nerve, applying controlled pressure to induce injury, and ensuring the epineurium remains intact to support axonal regeneration. Over time, macrophages...

We have developed a nerve injury method to reliably examine muscle reinnervation, and thus regeneration of neuromuscular junctions in mice. This technique involves injuring the common fibular nerve via a simple and highly reproducible surgery. Muscle reinnervation in then assessed by whole-mounting the extensor digitorum longus muscle.

One constraint of preclinical research in the field of bone repair is the lack of experimental control over the local mechanical environment within a healing bone lesion. We report the design and use of an external fixator for bone repair with the ability to change fixator stiffness in vivo.

Protocol for Developing a Femur Osteotomy Model in Wistar Albino Rats

Here, we present a protocol to iatrogenically fracture the shaft of the femur of Wistar albino rats and follow up on the development of the callus. This femur osteotomy model can help researchers evaluate the process of fracture healing and to study how a drug could influence fracture healing.
