Pro-migratory Factors

Pro-migratory factors are signaling molecules, extracellular cues, or engineered materials that increase the movement of cells through or across tissues and biomaterials. By activating receptors and downstream pathways, they can create chemotactic gradients, regulate integrin-mediated adhesion, reorganize the actin cytoskeleton, and promote matrix remodeling, enabling directed migration under defined conditions. In bioengineering, these factors help guide endothelial, stromal, immune, or stem cells in engineered scaffolds and microfluidic models, supporting tissue repair, vascularization, and studies of cell-material interactions. Their controlled presentation and concentration can improve spatial organization while providing experimental tools to evaluate how migration influences regeneration and disease.

Transcription Factors

Tissue-specific transcription factors contribute to diverse cellular functions in mammals. For example, the gene for beta globin, a major component of hemoglobin, is present in all cells of the body. However, it is only expressed in red blood cells because the transcription factors that can bind to the promoter sequences of the beta globin gene are only expressed in these cells. Tissue-specific transcription factors also ensure that mutations in these factors may impair only the function of...
