Animal Serum Free Medium

Animal serum-free medium is a cell-culture formulation that supports the growth, maintenance, or differentiation of animal cells without adding serum, improving control over experimental conditions and product composition. Instead, it supplies essential nutrients and defined or controlled supplements, such as amino acids, vitamins, salts, lipids, and growth factors, to regulate cell survival and proliferation. By removing serum’s variable proteins and potential inhibitors or contaminants, these media can increase reproducibility and simplify downstream analysis. They are used in basic biology, stem-cell research, vaccine and biologics production, and other applications requiring consistent, scalable cell culture.

Efforts to understand microglial function in detail have been hindered by the lack of microglial culture models that recapitulate the properties of mature in vivo microglia. This protocol describes an isolation and culture approach designed to maintain robust survival of highly ramified mature rat microglia under defined-medium conditions.

Preparation of Pooled Human Platelet Lysate (pHPL) as an Efficient Supplement for Animal Serum-Free Human Stem Cell Cultures
