Auditory Nerve

The auditory nerve is the bundle of sensory fibers that carries hearing-related information from the inner ear to the brain, making sound perception possible. In the cochlea, sound-induced vibrations move hair cells, which convert mechanical stimulation into electrical signals; neurons in the spiral ganglion then transmit these impulses through the cochlear branch of cranial nerve VIII to the brainstem. Studying this pathway helps explain how the nervous system encodes sound frequency and intensity, and supports research into hearing loss, auditory neuropathy, diagnostic testing, and cochlear implants. Its function also provides a foundation for investigating communication, development, and sensory neuroscience.

Cochlear implants (CIs) enable hearing by direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. However, poor frequency and intensity resolution limits the quality of hearing with CIs. Here we describe optogenetic stimulation of the auditory nerve in mice as an alternative strategy for auditory research and developing future CIs.

(2023)This video demonstrates the measurement of auditory brainstem response (ABR) in a mouse. Electrodes are placed on the head, behind the ear, and near the tail of an anesthetized mouse. Acoustic stimuli at various intensities are delivered, and electric signals generated are recorded as waveforms.

Preparing Wedge Brain Slices to Visualize Auditory Neurons

This video demonstrates the process of preparing wedge-shaped brain slices in a laboratory setting. Using a vibratome, a wedge-shaped slice from a mouse's brain is crafted with varying thickness. This slice contains the auditory nerve root positioned on the thicker end, while the hearing-related neurons are located on the thinner end.
