Capnography Analysis

Capnography analysis is the measurement and interpretation of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in exhaled air, providing a real-time view of ventilation and respiratory physiology. Most capnographs use infrared absorption to quantify CO₂ throughout the respiratory cycle, producing a waveform that reflects inspiration, expiration, alveolar gas exchange, and end-tidal CO₂ concentration. In biology and clinical research, analyzing waveform shape and CO₂ values helps assess airway function, ventilation-perfusion relationships, metabolic activity, and changes in respiratory status. The technique supports studies of breathing regulation and is widely used to monitor anesthesia, mechanical ventilation, and respiratory disorders.

2025

In this video, we demonstrate a multisystem monitoring method to evaluate neurological and cardiorespiratory abnormalities during intravenous injection of a seizure-inducing drug. The simultaneous monitoring of video EEG, ECG, oximetry, and capnography parameters helps to understand the real-time physiological changes associated with epileptic seizures.

Here, we describe two measures of pulmonary function – barometric plethysmography, which allows the measurement of lung volume, and volumetric capnography, a tool to measure the anatomic dead space and airways uniformity. These techniques may be used independently or combined to assess airways function at different lung volumes.
