Chronic Lung Infection

Chronic lung infection is a persistent invasion or colonization of the respiratory tract by microorganisms, causing prolonged disease and inflammation rather than a brief, self-limited illness. It develops when pathogens resist immune clearance, persist in airway secretions or biofilms, or exploit damaged lung tissue, sustaining inflammatory responses that can impair gas exchange and progressively injure airways. In biology and clinical research, studying chronic lung infection helps explain host–pathogen interactions, immune dysfunction, and tissue remodeling. This knowledge supports improved diagnostic methods, antimicrobial strategies, and therapies designed to limit recurring infection and preserve lung function.
