Hemolymph Delivery

Hemolymph delivery is the transport of nutrients, hormones, immune factors, and other substances through the circulatory fluid of arthropods and many other invertebrates. In an open circulatory system, a dorsal vessel pumps hemolymph into the hemocoel, where it directly bathes organs before returning through openings called ostia; this circulation distributes materials without a closed network of blood vessels. Studying hemolymph delivery helps explain insect physiology, development, immunity, and responses to environmental stress. It also supports research on how pathogens, toxins, hormones, and experimentally introduced compounds move through invertebrate bodies.

2023

The Drosophila hemolymph serves as both blood and interstitial fluid, circulating throughout the body during the larva and adult stages. This video describes a protocol to collect larval hemolymph in order to quantify the circulating cells.

Insulin Injection and Hemolymph Extraction to Measure Insulin Sensitivity in Adult Drosophila melanogaster

Conserved insulin signaling pathways found in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster make this organism a potential tool for modeling metabolic disorders including type II diabetes. To this end, it is critical to establish physiological assays to effectively measure systemic insulin action in peripheral glucose disposal in the adult fly.

RNA interference (RNAi) is an extremely valuable tool for uncovering gene function. However, the ability to target genes using RNAi during pre-adult stages is limited in the major human malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. We describe an RNAi protocol to reduce gene function via direct injection during pupal development.
