Postnatal Care

Postnatal care is the coordinated care provided to a mother and newborn after birth, supporting recovery, adaptation, and early detection of health problems. It monitors maternal changes such as uterine involution, wound healing, bleeding, blood pressure, and lactation, while assessing the newborn’s temperature, feeding, weight, breathing, and overall adaptation to life outside the womb. Care may include breastfeeding guidance, hygiene education, screening, immunization, and recognition of warning signs such as infection or respiratory difficulty. In biology and clinical research, postnatal care provides a framework for studying maternal physiology, neonatal development, and interventions that improve survival, health, and long-term outcomes.

To distinguish cell division from cell cycle variations in cardiomyocytes, we present protocols using two transgenic mouse lines: Myh6-H2B-mCh transgenic mice, for the unequivocal identification of cardiomyocyte nuclei, and CAG-eGFP-anillin mice, for distinguishing cell division from cell cycle variations.

Neuroblast migration is a fundamental event in postnatal neurogenesis. We describe a protocol for efficient labeling of neuroblasts by in vivo postnatal electroporation and subsequent visualization of their migration using time-lapse imaging of acute brain slices. We include a description for the quantitative analysis of neuroblast dynamics by video tracking.

2015

During postnatal cerebellum development, immature granule cells originating from the germinal zone exhibit distinct modalities of migration to reach their final destination and to establish neuronal networks. This protocol describes the preparation of cerebellar slices and the confocal macroscopic approach used to investigate the factors that regulate neuronal migration.

Gene Delivery to Postnatal Rat Brain by Non-ventricular Plasmid Injection and Electroporation
