Spider Venom Extraction

Spider venom extraction is the controlled collection of venom from living spiders for studying the complex molecules that influence nerves, muscles, blood vessels, and other biological systems. In a typical procedure, a restrained spider receives carefully regulated electrical stimulation near the chelicerae, causing the venom glands to contract and release venom through the fangs into a collection vessel; researchers then preserve and analyze the sample. This method supports venom profiling, toxin characterization, comparative biology, and investigations of how venom components act on cellular targets. It also helps identify peptides with potential applications in neuroscience, pharmacology, pest management, and therapeutic development.

Here we describe an efficient strategy to remove the silk-producing glands from the abdomen of female black widow spiders. This procedure allows the rapid isolation of the seven distinct silk-producing glands in a highly purified fashion, an important process for investigators studying spider silk production and fiber assembly.
