Spinous Process Resection

Spinous process resection is a surgical procedure that removes all or part of a spinous process, the posterior bony projection of a vertebra. By excising this structure, the procedure can enlarge access to the vertebral canal or adjacent tissues and reduce mechanical contact involving the posterior spine, depending on the surgical objective. In biology and biomedical research, spinous process resection supports studies of vertebral anatomy, spinal biomechanics, tissue injury, and repair, while also serving as an approach for exposing deeper spinal structures. Careful preservation of surrounding bone, ligaments, muscles, and neural tissues is essential for interpreting structural and functional outcomes.

Source: Alomari, S., et al. Implementation of Minimally Invasive Brain Tumor Resection in Rodents for High Viability Tissue Collection. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)This video demonstrates the use of a minimally invasive resection system (MIRS) to excise tumor tissue from an anesthetized mouse implanted with a tumor. The procedure involves securing the mouse onto a stereotactic frame, reopening the previous surgical site to access the brain, and inserting a specialized cannula that utilizes suction and a...

Open Surgical Resection of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations

Source: Rennert, R. C., et al. Comprehensive Endovascular and Open Surgical Management of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations. J. Vis. Exp. (2017).This video demonstrates the open surgical resection of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a human brain. The procedure involves creating a bone flap, accessing the subarachnoid space, identifying and occluding feeding arteries and draining veins, and carefully removing the AVM. Intraoperative angiography confirms complete resection,...

The Influence of Liver Resection on Intrahepatic Tumor Growth
