Vasa Nervorum

Vasa nervorum are the small blood vessels that supply peripheral nerves, providing oxygen and nutrients essential for nerve maintenance and function. These vessels form a microvascular network within the epineurium and perineurium, where regulated blood flow supports Schwann cells and axons; disruption can cause nerve ischemia, impaired conduction, and structural injury. Studying the vasa nervorum helps explain how diabetes, vasculitis, compression, and other vascular disorders contribute to peripheral neuropathy. Their anatomy and responses to injury are also relevant to neurovascular biology, disease diagnosis, and the development of treatments that preserve or restore nerve function.
