Aqueous Crosslinking

Aqueous crosslinking is a chemical process that links polymer chains within a water-based medium to form a stable, three-dimensional network. Crosslinking occurs when multifunctional molecules or reactive groups create covalent bonds, ionic interactions, or other bridges between dissolved or dispersed polymers, while water serves as the continuous phase and reaction environment. The resulting materials can show greater mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and resistance to dissolution than uncrosslinked polymers. In chemistry, aqueous crosslinking supports the preparation of hydrogels, coatings, adhesives, encapsulation systems, and other functional polymeric materials while reducing reliance on organic solvents.

Nanogels are an excellent and versatile nanoparticle platform for the delivery of biologics. Stimuli-responsive poly(ethylene) glycol-based polymeric nano-gels, capable of encapsulating protein-based payloads, were synthesized using a one-step cross-linking co-nanopolymerization strategy in aqueous conditions. The optimal fabrication and characterization of these novel nanoparticles are presented here.

This article describes a process for tuning the size and crosslinking density of covalently crosslinked nanoparticles from linear polyesters containing pendant functionality. By tailoring synthesis parameters (polymer molecular weight, pendant functionality incorporation, and crosslinker equivalents), a desired nanoparticle size and crosslinking density can be achieved for drug delivery applications.

Crosslinking Neuronal Surface Proteins in the Mouse Brain using a Chemical Crosslinking Assay

2025

This video demonstrates the crosslinking of neuronal surface proteins using Bis-sulfosuccinimidyl suberate or BS3. Isolated and chilled mouse brain is sectioned coronally. The desired region is extracted from the sections, minced, and treated with BS3. BS3 crosslinks surface proteins like GABA receptors, leaving internal proteins unaltered. The reaction is quenched with glycine before processing the samples for further analysis.

Chemical Reactions in Aqueous Solutions

2020

Chemical substances interact in many different ways. Certain chemical reactions exhibit common patterns of reactivity. Due to the vast number of chemical reactions, it becomes necessary to classify them based on the observed patterns of interaction. Water is a good solvent that can dissolve many substances. For this reason, many chemical reactions take place in water. Such reactions are called aqueous reactions. The three most common types of aqueous reactions are precipitation, acid-base, and...

Aqueous Solutions and Heats of Hydration

Water and other polar molecules are attracted to ions. The electrostatic attraction between an ion and a molecule with a dipole is called an ion-dipole attraction. These attractions play an important role in the dissolution of ionic compounds in water. When ionic compounds dissolve in water, the ions in the solid separate and disperse uniformly throughout the solution because water molecules surround and solvate the ions, reducing the strong electrostatic forces between them. This process...
