Capacitance Pressure Transducer

A capacitance pressure transducer is a sensor that converts pressure into an electrical signal by detecting changes in capacitance, making it useful for precise pressure measurement in engineering systems. Typically, applied pressure deflects a flexible diaphragm positioned near a fixed electrode, altering the gap and therefore the capacitance between them. An excitation circuit and signal-conditioning electronics translate this change into a calibrated voltage, current, or digital output. These transducers support monitoring and control in fluid systems, industrial process equipment, aerospace instrumentation, and laboratory measurements, particularly where high sensitivity, low mechanical loading, and reliable detection of small pressure variations are important.

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC Fluid pressure is an important flow characteristic that is required to determine the aerodynamics of a system. One of the oldest and still existing pressure measurement systems is the manometer due to its accuracy and simplicity of operation. The manometer is generally a U-shaped glass tube that is partially filled with liquid, as shown in Figure 1. The U-tube manometer requires no...

A novel technique to record the pressures within the skull is described. The minimally invasive method uses a fibre-optic pressure sensing system to accurately measure intracranial pressure (ICP) in anaesthetized rats without causing significant brain trauma. The technique may be used in a wide range of experimental models.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment will use commercial capacitors and a parallel plate capacitor to demonstrate the concept of capacitance. A capacitor stores opposite charges on two conductors, for example two opposite metal plates, leading to a potential difference (voltage drop) between the two conductors. The amount of charge on each conductor is proportional to this voltage drop, with...

The non-nutritive suck (NNS) device can easily collect and quantify NNS features using a pacifier connected to a pressure transducer and recorded through a data acquisition system and laptop. Quantification of NNS parameters can provide valuable insight into a child's current and future neurodevelopment.
