Genomics Proteomics

Genomics and proteomics are complementary fields that study an organism’s genetic material and the proteins produced from it, respectively, providing a broader view of biological function than either alone. Genomics typically analyzes DNA sequences and variation through sequencing and computational comparison, whereas proteomics measures protein abundance, modification, and interactions, often using mass spectrometry and bioinformatics. Together, these approaches connect genetic variants with changes in cellular pathways and protein activity. In genetics research, integrated genomics-proteomics analyses support disease-gene discovery, biomarker identification, functional annotation, and a more precise understanding of inherited traits and molecular mechanisms.

2011

A straight-forward set of methods to isolate and determine the identity of the most abundant proteins expressed in skeletal muscle. About 800 spots are discerned on a two-dimensional gel from 10 mg muscle; this allows for the determination of gender-specific protein expression. These methods will give equivalent results in most tissues.

Bottom-up and Shotgun Proteomics to Identify a Comprehensive Cochlear Proteome

Proteome analysis of the cochlear sensory epithelium can be challenging due to its small size and because membrane proteins are difficult to isolate and identify. Both membrane and soluble proteins can be identified by combining multiple preparative methods and separation techniques along with high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Single Virus Genomics (SVG) is a method to isolate and amplify the genomes of single virons. Viral suspensions of a mixed assemblage are sorted using flow cytometry onto a microscope slide with discrete wells containing agarose, thereby capturing the virion and reducing genome shearing during downstream processing. Whole genome amplification is achieved using multiple displacement amplification (MDA) resulting in genomic material that is suitable for sequencing.

Genomics is the science of genomes: it is the study of all the genetic material of an organism. In humans, the genome consists of information carried in 23 pairs of chromosomes in the nucleus, as well as mitochondrial DNA. In genomics, both coding and non-coding DNA is sequenced and analyzed. Genomics allows a better understanding of all living things, their evolution, and their diversity. It has a myriad of uses: for example, to build phylogenetic trees, to improve productivity and...
