Rat Caudal Vertebrae

Rat caudal vertebrae are the series of small bones that form the rat’s tail, providing a defined model of segmental spinal anatomy and biomechanics. Each vertebra connects with neighboring segments through articulations, intervertebral tissues, ligaments, and surrounding muscles, allowing flexion and extension while transmitting mechanical loads along the tail. In medicine and biomedical research, these accessible vertebrae support studies of bone structure, joint mechanics, tissue injury, pain, and repair. Their repeated anatomy can also aid imaging, dissection, and evaluation of musculoskeletal interventions, linking basic vertebral biology with broader questions in spinal health and regenerative medicine.

Development of a Rat Caudal Interbody Fusion Model: A Pilot Feasibility Study

2026

This study demonstrated the technical feasibility of a pilot rat caudal interbody fusion model using posterior cage and plate fixation. Histomorphometric analysis at 12 weeks confirmed continuous bone bridging and distinct intra-cage bone maturation patterns. This technical model serves as a preliminary foundation for future large-scale studies.

General Structure of a Vertebra

2025

A typical vertebra, with the exception of the sacrum and coccyx, consists of a body, a vertebral arch, and seven different projections termed processes. The anterior portion of the vertebrae, the body, supports about half the body’s weight. The vertebral bodies progressively increase in size and thickness from the cervical region to the lumbar region of the vertebral column. The intervertebral discs present between the bodies of adjacent vertebrae firmly unites them, forming a continuous column.

Here, we present a method for assessing the activation and block of sensory axons in peripheral nerves in acute, anesthetized, in vivo rat experiments using two types of spinal electrophysiological measurements that can discriminate the activity of nerve fiber subtypes: Local Field Potentials and Wide Dynamic Range single neuron recordings.

Intrathecal Delivery of a Test Compound to the Rat Central Nervous System

Source: Chen, Y., et al. Intrathecal Delivery of Antisense Oligonucleotides in the Rat Central Nervous System. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the delivery of a test compound into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through a catheter implanted in the lumbar spinal column of a rat model. The compound circulates along the CSF to the brain and spinal cord, enters neurons, and offers therapeutic potential.
