Myocardial Tissue Characterization

Myocardial tissue characterization is the quantitative assessment of heart muscle composition, structure, and injury using physical measurements, helping distinguish healthy myocardium from diseased tissue. In cardiovascular imaging, techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging measure tissue-dependent signal properties, including T1 and T2 relaxation times, while contrast-enhanced methods identify regions with altered extracellular space or delayed contrast clearance. These measurements can reveal fibrosis, edema, infarction, inflammation, and infiltrative disease, often before major changes in cardiac function occur. Myocardial tissue characterization therefore supports diagnosis, risk assessment, treatment planning, and research into disease progression and therapeutic response.

The generation of aligned myocardial tissue is a key requirement for adapting the recent advances in stem cell biology to clinically useful purposes. Herein we describe a microcontact printing approach for the precise control of cell shape and function. Using highly purified populations of embryonic stem cell derived cardiac progenitors, we then generate anisotropic functional myocardial tissue.
