Ratchet Pawl Gear

A ratchet pawl gear is a mechanical device that permits controlled rotation in one direction while preventing reverse movement. It operates through a toothed wheel and a pivoting pawl: the pawl slides over inclined tooth surfaces during forward motion, then engages a tooth flank to lock the wheel when force reverses. This simple mechanism converts intermittent input into secure, stepwise positioning and is used in tensioning systems, adjustment tools, locking assemblies, and laboratory or biomechanical equipment. Understanding ratchet pawl gears helps researchers analyze directional force transmission, mechanical stability, and motion control in devices designed for biological measurement or physical rehabilitation.

High-throughput Flow-cytometry Measurement of Cellular Mechanotype Based on Rupture and Delivery of DNA Tension Probes into Cells

2025

This method measures a cell's propensity to rupture ligand-presenting immobilized DNA-duplexes to report relative cellular traction forces. Ruptured fluorescent oligos are delivered into the cell and analyzed by flow cytometry, recording the mechanical history of the cell. This allows for high-throughput measurement of cellular force generation in the context of cellular mechanophenotyping.
