Toxic-free Staining

Toxic-free staining is an approach to visualizing cells, tissues, or biomolecules while minimizing hazardous dyes, solvents, and waste, making biological analysis safer and more sustainable. It works by replacing conventional toxic reagents with less hazardous stains or detection chemistries that interact selectively with cellular structures, proteins, nucleic acids, or other targets to generate visible contrast. In biology, these methods support microscopy, histology, cell studies, and laboratory teaching while reducing exposure risks and disposal demands. Toxic-free staining can help laboratories maintain reliable visualization and reproducible observations, with potential value for routine research, education, and environmentally responsible experimental workflows.

Source: Rhiannon M. LeVeque1, Natalia Martin1, Andrew J. Van Alst1, and Victor J. DiRita1 1 Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, United States of America Bacteria are diverse microorganisms found nearly everywhere on Earth. Many properties help distinguish them from each other, including but not limited to Gram-staining type, shape and arrangement, production of capsule, and formation of spores. To observe these properties, one...

C. elegans Survival Assay: A Short-Term Toxicity Test

2023

This video introduces a short-term survival assay that tests a treatment for acute toxicity or tests a genetic strain for resistance to a toxic condition. The example protocol shows an example survival assay in which worms are tested for their ability to resist oxidative stress induced by paraquat (PQ).
