Cytochrome P450 Oxidation

Cytochrome P450 oxidation is an enzyme-mediated chemical process that modifies drugs, hormones, and other compounds, influencing their activity, clearance, and toxicity. In this reaction, a heme-containing cytochrome P450 enzyme uses molecular oxygen and electrons supplied by NADPH to insert one oxygen atom into a substrate while reducing the other to water. In cancer research, these enzymes help explain differences in anticancer drug metabolism, treatment response, and adverse effects, while also contributing to the activation of some chemical carcinogens and prodrugs. Studying P450 activity supports drug development, individualized therapy, and evaluation of interactions between anticancer agents and other compounds.

Pharmacogenetics of Phase I Enzymes: Cytochrome P450 Isozymes

2026

Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzymes are a superfamily of heme-containing monooxygenases that play a pivotal role in Phase I drug metabolism by catalyzing oxidation and reduction reactions. These enzymes transform lipophilic xenobiotics into more hydrophilic metabolites, facilitating subsequent Phase II conjugation and eventual excretion. The CYP450 family is classified into families (e.g., CYP1–CYP3) and subfamilies (e.g., CYP2A, CYP2C), based on amino acid sequence homology.CYP450 isoenzymes,...

In this protocol, we describe the direct cytoplasmic microinjection of cytochrome c protein into fibroblasts and primary sympathetic neurons. This technique allows for the introduction of cytochrome c protein into the cytoplasm of cells and mimics the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria, which occurs during apoptosis.

This procedure describes how to encapsulate cytochrome c (cyt. c) in silica (SiO2) sol-gels, process these gels to form bioaerogels, and use these bioaerogels to rapidly recognize nitric oxide (NO) through a gas-phase reaction. This type of protocol may aid in the future development of biosensors or other bioanalytical devices.

Oxidation Numbers

2020

In redox reactions, the transfer of electrons occurs between reacting species. Electron transfer is described by a hypothetical number called the oxidation number (or oxidation state). It represents the effective charge of an atom or element, which is assigned using a set of rules. Oxidation Number (Oxidation State) In the case of an ionic compound, oxidation numbers are assigned based on the number of electrons transferred between reacting species. For example, in the formation of calcium...
