Hyperglycemia Zebrafish

Hyperglycemia zebrafish refers to the use of zebrafish with experimentally elevated blood glucose to study how excess glucose affects organismal and developmental biology. The model typically exposes embryos or larvae to glucose-rich conditions or induces impaired glucose regulation, then examines how altered glucose availability influences cellular signaling, growth, and tissue formation during development. Researchers use hyperglycemia zebrafish to investigate developmental abnormalities associated with metabolic disease, evaluate changes in organ and vascular development, and test potential therapeutic strategies. Their small size, rapid development, and optical accessibility support efficient observation of glucose-related phenotypes in living animals.

This work describes methods to establish acute and chronic hyperglycemia models in zebrafish. The aim is to investigate the impact of hyperglycemia on physiological processes, such as constitutive and injury-induced neurogenesis. The work also highlights the use of zebrafish to follow radiolabeled molecules (here, [18F]-FDG) using PET/CT.

Hyperglycemia is an abnormally high blood glucose level. It is diagnosed by fasting glucose ≥126 mg/dL, 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test (or OGTT) ≥200 mg/dL, random glucose ≥200 mg/dL with symptoms, or HbA1c ≥6.5%. However, HbA1c results may be unreliable in certain conditions, such as anemia or hemoglobinopathies, and the diagnosis should be confirmed unless classic symptoms are present. Postprandial hyperglycemia is typically considered significant when glucose levels exceed 180 mg/dL two...

Metabolic memory is the phenomenon by which diabetic complications persist and progress unimpeded even after euglycemia is achieved pharmaceutically. Here we describe a diabetes mellitus zebrafish model which is unique in that it allows for the examination of the mitotically transmissible epigenetic components of metabolic memory in vivo.
