Red Channel Analysis

Red channel analysis is an image-analysis approach that isolates and measures red-associated signals in biomedical images, helping researchers distinguish labeled cells, tissues, or clinical features from other visual information. In fluorescence or color images, software separates the red channel from the green and blue channels, then quantifies properties such as pixel intensity, signal area, distribution, or overlap with additional markers after appropriate background correction. In medicine, these measurements can support fluorescence microscopy, histopathology, and biomarker assessment by converting visual patterns into reproducible data for comparing samples, evaluating cellular changes, and monitoring disease-related signals. Careful calibration and consistent imaging settings are essential for meaningful interpretation.

Changes in the intracellular calcium levels in the podocytes are one of the most important means to control the filtration function of glomeruli. Here we explain a high-throughput approach that allows detection of real-time calcium handling and single ion channels activity in the podocytes of the freshly isolated glomeruli.

Ion Channels

2019

The movement of ions like sodium, potassium, and calcium into and out of the cell is essential to maintain the electrochemical gradient in living cells. The ion channels—a class of membrane transport proteins—help maintain this ionic gradient for the smooth functioning of physiological activities such as maintaining cell size and volume, conducting nerve impulses, and gas and nutrient exchange. Ion channels are specialized integral membrane proteins on the plasma membrane that allow specific...

Red algae, also known as rhodophytes, are primarily found in marine environments, though some species inhabit freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. These organisms exist in both unicellular and multicellular forms, with some multicellular varieties reaching macroscopic sizes. As phototrophic organisms, red algae contain chlorophyll a; however, their chloroplasts lack chlorophyll b. Instead, they possess phycobiliproteins, which serve as major light-harvesting pigments, similar to those found in...

Described here is a procedure for obtaining long stretches of current recording from one ion channel with the cell-attached patch-clamp technique. This method allows for observing, in real time, the pattern of open-close channel conformations that underlie the biological signal. These data inform about channel properties in undisturbed biological membranes.
