Chorda Tympani

The chorda tympani is a branch of the facial nerve that carries taste and autonomic signals, making it an important pathway in sensory and parasympathetic neuroscience. It conveys taste information from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue and carries preganglionic parasympathetic fibers to the submandibular ganglion, where they support secretion from the submandibular and sublingual glands. After passing through the middle ear, it exits via the petrotympanic fissure and joins the lingual nerve. Studying this nerve helps researchers understand cranial nerve organization, taste processing, salivary control, and the effects of middle-ear disease or surgery on oral sensation.

Source: Alexander Goldfarb, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, MA Medical percussion is based on the difference in pitch between the sounds elicited by tapping on the body wall. The auditory response to tapping depends on the ease with which the body wall vibrates, and is influenced by underlying organs, strength of the stroke, and the state of the body wall. There are three main medical percussion sounds: resonance (heard over lungs), tympany (heard over...

Source: Akil, O., et al., Surgical Method for Virally Mediated Gene Delivery to the Mouse Inner Ear through the Round Window Membrane. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)This video demonstrates the procedure of delivering a therapeutic gene into the inner ear of a mouse pup with genetically induced hearing loss. Using an adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector, the gene is injected through the round window membrane, allowing viral particles to enter hair cells, restore glutamate transporter production, and...

Abdominal Exam IV: Acute Abdominal Pain Assessment

2023

Source: Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Abdominal pain is a frequent presenting concern in both the emergency department and the office setting. Acute abdominal pain is defined as pain lasting less than seven days, while an acute abdomen refers to the abrupt onset of severe abdominal pain with features suggesting a surgically intervenable process. The differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain is broad; thus, clinicians must have a...
