Introduction to Plant Diversity

Bevor Pflanzen das Land

Nun leben Millionen von Arten von
Mikroben, Pflanzen und Tieren
auf dem Land, und es war die
Evolution der Landpflanzen,
die all das m&#xF6;glich machte.
Um diese atemberaubende
Transformation zu verstehen,
ist es zun&#xE4;chst notwendig,
zu begreifen,
was Pflanzen genau sind,
und wie sie sich entwickelt haben,
um die Herausforderungen des
Lebens auf dem Land zu bew&#xE4;ltigen.
Es gibt bestimmte
Eigenschaften,
die alle Pflanzen gemeinsam haben,
von den h&#xF6;chstgewachsenen B&#xE4;umen
bis zum kleinsten Moos.
Zuerst sind alle Pflanzen
mehrzellige Eukaryoten.
Zweitens, Pflanzen produzieren

Der Sporophyt dagegen
erzeugt haploide Sporen
durch Meiose, was den
Zyklus vervollst&#xE4;ndigt, indem
neue Gametophyten entstehen.
Obwohl alle Pflanzen diese
Charakteristiken teilen,
gibt es gro&#xDF;e Unterschiede
unter den verschiedenen Pflanzenabstammungen
darin, wie einige dieser
Charakteristiken sich ausdr&#xFC;cken.
Landpflanzen fallen in drei
Hauptgruppen, die gef&#xE4;&#xDF;losen
Pflanzen, die samenlos-vaskul&#xE4;ren
Pflanzen und die Samenpflanzen.

Vom Wasser zum Land
Das Pflanzenreich trat erstmals vor etwa 470 Millionen Jahren in Erscheinung, als charophytische Gr&#xFC;nalgen vom Wasser zum Land &#xFC;bergingen. Dieses Land war eine relativ unbesiedelte Umwelt mit reichlich vorhandenen Ressourcen. Terrestrische Lebensr&#xE4;ume boten au&#xDF;erdem mehr Licht und Kohlenstoffdioxid, die Pflanzen f&#xFC;r Wachstum und &#xDC;berleben ben&#xF6;tigen.
Die deutlichen Unterschiede zwischen Land und Meer stellten die fr&#xFC;hen Arten, die das Land besiedelten, jedoch vor eine gewaltige Herausforderung und f&#xFC;hrten zu zahlreichen neuen Anpassungen, aus denen die gro&#xDF;e Vielfalt der heute beobachteten Pflanzenformen hervorgegangen ist.
Eine fr&#xFC;he Anpassung war die Entwicklung einer &#xE4;u&#xDF;eren wachsartigen Beschichtung, die als Kutikula bezeichnet wird. Kutikulen dienen dazu, Pflanzen vor Austrocknung zu sch&#xFC;tzen, indem sie Feuchtigkeit im Inneren zur&#xFC;ckhalten. Diese Anpassung verhinderte jedoch den direkten Gasaustausch &#xFC;ber die Pflanzenoberfl&#xE4;che. Infolgedessen entwickelten sich Poren auf den &#xE4;u&#xDF;eren Oberfl&#xE4;chen der Pflanzen, die die Aufnahme von Kohlenstoffdioxid und die Abgabe von Sauerstoff erm&#xF6;glichten.
Zus&#xE4;tzliche Strukturen waren erforderlich, um den Transport von Wasser und N&#xE4;hrstoffen aus dem Boden in die oberen Bereiche der Pflanze zu erleichtern. Infolgedessen entwickelte sich Leitgewebe, das nicht nur dem Transport von Wasser und N&#xE4;hrstoffen in alle Bereiche der Pflanze dient, sondern auch strukturellen Halt bietet, wenn die Sprossachsen h&#xF6;her und kr&#xE4;ftiger wachsen.
Zur Erm&#xF6;glichung der Fortpflanzung an Land entwickelten Landpflanzen Gametangien &#x2013; Fortpflanzungsstrukturen, die vor den rauen Bedingungen au&#xDF;erhalb der Pflanze Gameten und Embryonen sch&#xFC;tzen. Bei den M&#xE4;nnchen hei&#xDF;t diese Struktur Antheridium, w&#xE4;hrend sie bei den Weibchen Archegonium hei&#xDF;t.
Es entwickelten sich unterschiedliche Strategien, um den Transport der Spermien von den Antheridien zu den Eizellen innerhalb der Archegonien zu erleichtern. Dazu geh&#xF6;ren Spermien, die von einer Struktur zur n&#xE4;chsten schwimmen, oder Pollen, der vom Wind getragen oder durch Best&#xE4;uber wie Bienen und V&#xF6;gel transportiert wird. Die jeweils verwendete Fortpflanzungsweise ist f&#xFC;r jede Pflanzengruppe charakteristisch. Nach der Befruchtung verbleiben die Eizellen in den Archegonien, um den sich entwickelnden Embryo beziehungsweise Sporophyten zu sch&#xFC;tzen und zu ern&#xE4;hren.
Eine weitere bedeutende Fortpflanzungsanpassung war die Bildung von Samen. Obwohl nicht alle Landpflanzen Samen bilden, sind Samen aus vielen Gr&#xFC;nden vorteilhaft. Ohne diese Strukturen ben&#xF6;tigen Pflanzen feuchte Umgebungen, um Gameten von einem Ort zum anderen zu transportieren. Bei samenlosen Pflanzen sind die Sporen h&#xE4;ufig ungef&#xE4;hr gleich gro&#xDF; (homospor) und breiten sich unabh&#xE4;ngig voneinander aus. Samenpflanzen besitzen dagegen im Allgemeinen kleine m&#xE4;nnliche Sporen, die an eine hohe Beweglichkeit angepasst sind und als Pollenk&#xF6;rner bezeichnet werden. Diese gelangen zu den weiblichen Gametophyten, um die Spermien &#xFC;ber einen Pollenschlauch zur Eizelle zu transportieren. Sobald die Befruchtung erfolgt ist, bildet sich ein Samen, der den Pflanzenembryo und einen N&#xE4;hrstoffvorrat enth&#xE4;lt.
Durch diese Anpassungen sind Pflanzenarten entstanden, die gut an das Leben in terrestrischen Lebensr&#xE4;umen angepasst sind.
Hauptentwicklungslinien der Pflanzen
Obwohl heute unz&#xE4;hlige Pflanzenarten existieren, lassen sich alle einer von drei Gruppen zuordnen: gef&#xE4;&#xDF;los, samenlose Gef&#xE4;&#xDF;pflanzen und Samenpflanzen. Gef&#xE4;&#xDF;lose Pflanzen sind die urspr&#xFC;nglichsten und am wenigsten komplexen Pflanzen und umfassen Moose, Lebermoose und Hornmoose. Diesen Pflanzen fehlt Leitgewebe (Xylem und Phloem); Wasser und N&#xE4;hrstoffe bewegen sich haupts&#xE4;chlich durch Diffusion, Osmose und Kapillarwirkung durch die Pflanze. Die samenlosen Gef&#xE4;&#xDF;pflanzen umfassen Farne und Schachtelhalme und waren die erste Gruppe, die ein Leitgewebesystem entwickelte. Die letzte Gruppe, die Samenpflanzen, umfasst alle &#xFC;brigen Arten. Diese Gruppe ist die vielf&#xE4;ltigste und besiedelt das breiteste Spektrum an Lebensr&#xE4;umen. Sie wird in zwei gro&#xDF;e Untergruppen unterteilt: Bedecktsamer und Nacktsamer. Plant adaptations for life on land explain how Kingdom Plantae moved from water to land about 410 million years ago. This shift happened when green algae began colonizing a new environment that had not been widely occupied. Land offered more light and carbon dioxide for growth, but it also created major challenges for early plants.

One key adaptation was the cuticle, a waxy outer layer that helps prevent water loss. It traps moisture inside the plant. But it also limited direct gas exchange across the plant surface. To solve that problem, pores formed on the outside of plants so carbon dioxide could enter and oxygen could leave.

Plants also needed a way to move water and nutrients upward from the soil. Vascular tissue evolved for this job. It transports water and nutrients throughout the plant and gives stems support as they grow taller and stronger. Reproduction on land brought another challenge, so terrestrial plants developed gametangia, which are structures that protect gametes and embryos from the dry environment outside the plant. In males, this structure is called antheridia, and in females, it is called archegonia.

Different plants use different ways to move sperm from antheridia to eggs in archegonia. In some cases, sperm swim from one structure to the next. In others, wind carries them, or pollinators such as bees and birds transport them. After fertilization, eggs stay inside the archegonia, where the developing embryo, or sporophyte, is protected and nourished.

Seeds were another major step in plant evolution on land. Not all terrestrial plants have seeds, but seeds help plants survive in dry environments. Seedless plants often need moist conditions because male and female spores are about the same size and both travel. Seeded plants usually produce small male spores called pollen grains. These are highly mobile and move to female gametophytes, where sperm is delivered directly to the egg. After fertilization, a seed forms and contains the embryo plus a nutrient supply.

These adaptations produced the many plant forms seen today. Plant species are grouped into three major lineages: non-vascular, vascular seedless, and vascular seeded. Non-vascular plants are the most ancestral and least complex. They include mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. Vascular seedless plants include ferns and horsetails, and they were the first plants to evolve a vascular transport system.

The most diverse group is the vascular seeded plants, which occupy the broadest range of habitats. This group is split into angiosperms and gymnosperms. Angiosperms are flowering and fruiting plants, and their pollen is carried by wind or by pollinators. Gymnosperms are non-flowering plants such as conifers, cycads, and ginkgo trees. They produce bare seeds that are not protected by fruit, and their pollen is carried by wind.
