Xylem and Transpiration-driven Transport of Resources

Plants take in water and nutrients from the soil but require these substances even in distant tissues. How do plants transport these substances against the force of gravity?Water and dissolved minerals enter the plant through root hair cells in the epidermis. These substances then move to the xylem, where the fluid is called xylem sap.The xylem carries the sap from the roots to the rest of the plant by bulk flow, a pressure-driven movement of liquid over long distances, through specialized transport cells.These specialized cells, called tracheids and vessel elements, form a rigid, pipe-like system. These cells lack cytoplasm and organelles and have thick, lignified cell walls, which prevent the xylem from collapsing and stop sap from leaking.The main force that pulls xylem sap through the plant is transpiration from the leaves.A thin film of water sticks to the cell wall of each mesophyll cell. This film supports gas exchange during photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Water evaporates from this film, filling the air spaces within the leaf with water vapor.The air outside the plant is drier than the air inside the leaves. When the stomata are open, water vapor diffuses out along its concentration gradient, moving from the moist air spaces within the leaf to the atmosphere.As water vapor exits through the stomata, more liquid water evaporates from the mesophyll cell walls. This creates tension that pulls water from the leaf veins into the mesophyll cells to replace the lost water.Water molecules stick to each other through cohesion and also stick to the xylem walls through adhesion, which keeps a continuous column of water intact.Negative pressure in the leaf veins then pulls the xylem sap upward from the roots, through the stem, and into the leaves, transporting water and minerals throughout the plant.

The xylem of vascular plants distributes water and dissolved minerals that are taken up by the roots to the rest of the plant. The cells that transport xylem sap are dead upon maturity, and the movement of xylem sap is a passive process.

Tracheids and vessel elements transport xylem sap

Tracheary elements are the transport cells of the xylem. They lack cytoplasm and organelles when they are mature and are considered part of the apoplast of the plant because they connect directly with the extracellular space. There are two types of tracheary elements: tracheids and vessel elements.

Tracheids are elongated cells with lignified walls that contain small gaps called pits, which conduct xylem sap from one cell to the next in places where their walls overlap. Seedless vascular plants and most gymnosperms, or cone-bearing plants, have only tracheids, which are thought to have evolved before vessel elements.

Vessel elements are wider lignified cells that stack vertically to form vessels. They are connected by perforation plates, specialized cell end structures that have spaces through which xylem sap can flow. The larger diameter and the more efficient structure of perforation plates means that vessels made up of vessel elements can move a much larger volume of sap. Most angiosperms, or flowering plants, have both tracheids and vessel elements.

Active transport of minerals creates a water pressure gradient from roots to leaves

While water enters a plant passively through permeable root cells, active transport is required to move minerals into the xylem. The resulting high concentration of solutes in the roots creates a gradient in the pressure potential of water within the xylem, with higher pressure in the roots and lower pressure elsewhere in the plant, where solutes are less concentrated. Water will then move toward the lower pressure areas; however, this gradient is only a minor contributor to the overall transport of sap through the xylem.

Physical forces on water molecules hold fluid within the xylem

Transport of xylem sap through a plant is made possible in part by some of the physical properties of water itself. The cohesion-tension hypothesis for transport of sap through the xylem was first proposed in the 1890s. Cohesion between water molecules is relatively strong because all three atoms of a water molecule can participate in hydrogen bonding with other water molecules. This means that transpirational pull in the leaves can affect water molecules throughout the xylem, like links in a chain, all the way to the roots.

Another force, adhesion, allows water molecules to stick to surfaces within the plant, such as the cell walls of mesophyll cells in the leaf, where water surface tension is essential for drawing sap out of leaf vessels when water vapor is transpiring from the leaves. Adhesion of water molecules to the walls of xylem vessels prevents sap from seeping downward and out of the plant through the roots when the stomata close and the tension produced by transpiration ceases.

Xylem moves water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant. The cells that carry xylem sap are dead when mature, so the flow is passive. Xylem transport depends on special tracheary elements, which connect directly with the extracellular space in the apoplast.

There are two main tracheary elements: tracheids and vessel elements. Tracheids are long cells with lignified walls and small pits. These pits let xylem sap move from one cell to the next where the walls overlap. Seedless vascular plants and most gymnosperms have only tracheids, which are thought to have evolved first.

Vessel elements are wider lignified cells that stack to form vessels. Their ends have perforation plates, which contain openings for sap flow. Because of their larger diameter and efficient perforation plates, vessels can move a much larger volume of sap. Most angiosperms have both tracheids and vessel elements.

Water enters the plant passively through permeable root cells, but minerals must be moved into the xylem by active transport. This builds a high solute concentration in the roots. That difference creates a water pressure gradient, with higher pressure in the roots and lower pressure elsewhere in the plant. Water moves toward the lower pressure areas, but this is only a minor part of xylem transport.

Water also moves because of its physical properties. The cohesion-tension hypothesis explains how transpiration in the leaves can pull water through the xylem. Cohesion between water molecules is strong because hydrogen bonding links them together. Adhesion helps water stick to cell walls in the leaf and along the xylem, which supports the pull of sap upward and helps prevent sap from leaking downward when stomata close.
