Basic Plant Anatomy: Roots, Stems, and Leaves

Plants may seem less complex than animals, but they have organ systems that perform specific functions.Many plants have two organ systems: the root system and the shoot system.Roots are vegetative organs that grow underground, where they anchor the plant and absorb water and nutrients from the surrounding soil.The two main types of root systems are taproot systems and fibrous root systems.In a taproot system, a primary root emerges during germination and grows deep into the soil. Smaller lateral roots branch from this main root, increasing water and nutrient absorption.In a fibrous root system, the primary root is short-lived, and many thin adventitious roots arise from the stem. These roots form a shallow, dense network that anchors the plant and absorbs water and nutrients.The organs of the shoot system are grouped as reproductive or vegetative. Reproductive organs include flowers and fruits in angiosperms and cones in gymnosperms, which produce seeds that grow into new plants.Vegetative organs include stems and leaves. The stem provides structural support and positions leaves, buds, and flowers for better exposure to light.The stem also has nodes and internodes. Nodes are regions where leaves and branches attach, while internodes are the stem segments between two nodes.Each leaf attaches to the stem at a node by a stalk called the petiole.Leaves can be simple or compound. Simple leaves have a single blade, while compound leaves have multiple leaflets attached to one petiole.Some plants, such as grasses, lack a typical petiole. Instead, the leaf has a sheath that wraps around the stem, and the blade extends outward from it.The broad, flat region of the leaf is called the blade or lamina, and it serves as the main site of photosynthesis. Its thin, broad shape increases the surface area for light absorption.Together, roots, stems, leaves, and reproductive structures help the plant survive, grow, and reproduce.

The primary organs of vascular plants are roots, stems, and leaves, but these structures can be highly variable, adapted for the specific needs and environment of different plant species.

Roots

While roots are most often found underground, this is not universally the case. Aerial roots are any roots that emerge aboveground. Epiphytic plants, such as orchids, can live their entire lives without touching soil. Other types of aerial roots, such as those of the strangler fig or banyan, germinate aboveground but grow downward, eventually penetrating the soil below and appearing to &#x201C;strangle&#x201D; their host plant.

Some plants have roots that are adapted to provide additional support. Buttress roots are one such modification. Often found on trees growing in tropical areas where the soil is nutrient-poor, and there is plenty of water available near the surface from rainfall, buttress roots provide structural support to large trees with shallow roots. Brace roots or prop roots are another type of modified root that supports tall, shallow-rooted plants such as corn. They grow as adventitious roots&#x2014;those that do not develop from the primary root&#x2014;from nodes near the bottom of the stem, reaching the ground at an angle to provide structural support.

Stems

Plant stems have several functions. These include providing structure, supporting the leaves, buds, and flowers. Additionally, the stem will aid in orienting the leaves to maximize photosynthesis. Stems are composed of nodes, points at which leaves and branches attach, and internodes, the regions of stem between the nodes.

The petiole is a stalk that anchors each leaf at the node.

Leaves

The leaves conduct the majority of photosynthesis. While leaves can come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, the blades are often thin and flattened in shape to maximize the surface area exposed to sunlight. The terminal part of the leaf is called the blade, or lamina. Simple leaves have one blade per petiole, while compound leaves have multiple blades attached to each petiole. Some plants, such as grasses, lack a petiole. Instead, the blade directly envelops part of the stem.

Roots, Leaves, and Stems as Storage Vessels

Roots can be modified for food storage. Taproots such as carrots and beets are enlarged to store starches. Stems and leaves can also be modified to store starches - tubers such as potatoes are actually modified stems, even though they grow underground. Additionally, onions are a modified starch-storing leaf.

Plants are built from roots, stems, and leaves, but each organ can change to fit a plant’s environment. These structures may look very different from one species to another. They still carry out the main jobs needed for growth and survival.

Roots are usually underground, but that is not always true. Aerial roots grow aboveground. Epiphytic plants, such as orchids, can live without ever touching soil. In strangler figs and banyans, aerial roots begin aboveground, grow downward, and later reach the soil. Some roots are also specialized for support. Buttress roots help large tropical trees stand upright in shallow soil. Brace roots, also called prop roots, support tall plants like corn. These roots are adventitious roots, which means they do not arise from the primary root. Instead, they grow from nodes near the lower stem and angle into the ground.

Stems provide structure and hold up leaves, buds, and flowers. They also help position leaves so they can capture more light for photosynthesis. A stem has nodes, where leaves and branches attach, and internodes, which are the stem regions between nodes. The petiole is the stalk that connects a leaf to the node.

Leaves carry out most photosynthesis. Many leaves are thin and flat, which increases the surface area exposed to sunlight. The blade, also called the lamina, is the wide part of the leaf. Simple leaves have one blade per petiole, while compound leaves have several blades attached to one petiole. Some plants, such as grasses, do not have petioles. In these plants, the blade attaches directly to part of the stem.

Roots, stems, and leaves can also store food. Taproots, such as carrots and beets, are enlarged to store starches. Stems and leaves can store starch too. Potatoes are tubers, which are modified stems even though they grow underground. Onions are modified leaves that store starch.
