The Roles of Bacteria and Fungi in Plant Nutrition

Plants make their food through photosynthesis, but they also need minerals and nutrients.Some plants rely on soil-dwelling organisms to get resources from the soil more efficiently.Rhizobacteria are prokaryotes that live closely with plant roots. This diverse group of organisms gets nutrients from plant roots and supports the plant in several ways.For example, they may produce antibiotics that protect the plant from harmful microbes, absorb harmful chemicals from the soil, or help plants get essential nutrients.Nitrogen is a key component of proteins and nucleic acids. However, plants cannot use nitrogen gas directly from the atmosphere because they lack the machinery needed to convert it into usable forms.Certain prokaryotes convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia through nitrogen fixation.In soil, this ammonia quickly forms ammonium ions. Soil microbes then oxidize ammonium into nitrite and then into nitrate through nitrification. Plants absorb ammonium and nitrate and use them to grow.In legumes, such as peas, nitrogen fixation happens in specialized root structures called nodules.In this symbiotic relationship, Rhizobia bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms the plant can use, while the bacteria receive nutrients from the plant.Many plants also form beneficial partnerships with fungi. These fungi, called mycorrhizal fungi, get nutrients from the plant.In return, they help plants reach soil nutrients that would otherwise be difficult to access. For example, they help plants absorb nutrients like phosphate, copper, and zinc.Mycorrhizal fungi can also act as a physical barrier against pathogens or produce antibiotics that help protect the plant.

Plants have the impressive ability to create their own food through photosynthesis. However, plants often require assistance from organisms in the soil to acquire the nutrients they need to function correctly. Both bacteria and fungi have evolved symbiotic relationships with plants that help the species to thrive in a wide variety of environments.The collective bacteria residing in and around plant roots are termed the rhizosphere. These soil-dwelling bacterial species are incredibly diverse. Though some may be pathogenic, most have roles in promoting plant health. In exchange, the bacteria receive nutrition from plants in the form of carbohydrates, amino acids, and nucleic acids.The bacteria called rhizobacteria can protect plants by producing antibiotics or absorbing toxic metals in the soil. Additionally, bacteria help plants by accessing otherwise unusable stores of nutrients in the soil. For example, plants lack the molecular machinery to utilize nitrogen from the atmosphere directly. Instead, they take up nitrogen in the form of ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3- ), which is generated by soil-residing bacteria.During a process called nitrogen fixation, soil-dwelling bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia. Nitrogen-fixation requires large amounts of ATP that bacteria derive from plant-provided carbohydrates. Other groups of bacteria convert ammonia to nitrate during a two-step process called nitrification. These processes provide plants with forms of nitrogen that they can use to synthesize proteins and nucleic acids.Fungi also participate in symbiotic relationships with plants. Scientists think that the mutualistic relationship between plants and mycorrhizae fungi was a key adaptation in the successful colonization of land, helping early plants acquire essential elements from the soil. Modern mycorrhizae function in water acquisition, growth factor signaling, and plant protection. Ectomycorrhizae cover roots and help absorb water and minerals. At the same time, arbuscular mycorrhizae are embedded within the root tissue, increasing contact between the plant cells and the branching filaments of the fungus, called hyphae.

Soil microbes help plants get nutrients, water, and protection. Plants can make their own food by photosynthesis, but they still depend on organisms in the soil to get the nutrients they need to work properly. Bacteria and fungi form symbiotic relationships with plants, which helps both partners survive in many environments.

The bacteria living in and around plant roots are called the rhizosphere. This community is very diverse. Some bacteria can cause disease, but most help plant health. In return, the bacteria receive carbohydrates, amino acids, and nucleic acids from the plant. Rhizobacteria can also protect plants by making antibiotics or by absorbing toxic metals in the soil.

Bacteria also help plants reach nutrients they cannot use on their own. Plants cannot use nitrogen directly from the atmosphere. They need nitrogen as ammonium or nitrate instead. Soil bacteria make these forms through nitrogen fixation and nitrification. During nitrogen fixation, bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia. This process needs a lot of ATP, which bacteria get from plant-provided carbohydrates. Other bacteria then turn ammonia into nitrate in a two-step process called nitrification. Plants use these nitrogen forms to build proteins and nucleic acids.

Fungi also support plant life through mycorrhizae, which are mutualistic fungi that connect with roots. Scientists think this relationship helped early plants colonize land by improving access to soil nutrients. Today, mycorrhizae help with water uptake, growth factor signaling, and plant protection. Ectomycorrhizae cover roots and help absorb water and minerals. Arbuscular mycorrhizae grow inside root tissue and increase contact between plant cells and the fungus’s branching hyphae.
