Short-distance Transport of Resources

Plants transport water, nutrients, and sugars over short and long distances. Short-distance transport moves substances between nearby cells, while long-distance transport carries them through the xylem and phloem to different parts of the plant.When roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil, these resources move into nearby cells. Similarly, the products of photosynthesis move from photosynthetic cells to nearby cells that need energy or store nutrients.Plants use three main pathways for this transport. The apoplastic pathway moves substances through cell walls and the spaces between cells.The symplastic pathway moves substances through plasmodesmata, which are pores that directly connect the cytoplasm of neighboring cells.The transmembrane pathway moves substances in and out of cells across the plasma membrane. This process works well across a few cells but becomes slower over longer distances.Transport across membranes depends on the selectively permeable plasma membrane. Small, nonpolar molecules, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, move passively by diffusion from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.Some ions and polar molecules move across membranes by facilitated diffusion through specific channels or carrier proteins without using energy.Some substances, such as ions and sugars, need active transport when cells move them against their concentration or electrochemical gradient. Cells use energy to drive this process.Proton pumps use energy from ATP to create an electrochemical gradient of hydrogen ions across the cell membrane. Many transporter proteins in plants use this hydrogen gradient to move substances into the cell. For example, many nitrate transporters in roots bring nitrate into the cell together with hydrogen ions.These short-distance processes move substances into the xylem and phloem, which then carry them throughout the plant.

Transport across membranes also occurs within individual cells, playing a variety of essential roles for the plant as a whole.Resources are transported into and out of the central vacuole within each plant cellOne of the roles of the large central vacuole of a plant cell is the storage of resources. Active and passive transport proteins are found in the vacuolar membrane, or tonoplast, just as they are found in the plasma membrane of the cell, and they regulate the movement of solutes between the cytoplasm and vacuole. Sugar can be stored for later, ions are sequestered from the cytoplasm, and protons, in particular, are pumped into the vacuole, creating an acidic environment for breaking down unwanted or toxic substances that enter the cell.Movement across the tonoplast controls turgor pressureIn addition to its role in storage, the vacuole generates turgor pressure - a force that pushes the plasma membrane against the cell wall - contributing to the structure of the plant. The size of the vacuole is regulated by the movement of solutes across the tonoplast by channels and transporters. Water diffuses passively across the tonoplast to balance out a difference in solute concentration across the membrane, and it can also move more rapidly through aquaporins, water channels that can open and close in response to cellular signals. Under drought conditions, a lack of water will result in a loss of turgor pressure within individual cells as the vacuole shrinks. On a macroscopic level, the plant will appear wilted when turgor pressure is low.

Plant cell membranes control how water, ions, and other solutes move over short distances. This transport can happen across just 2 to 3 cells, and it begins at the plasma membrane. Small uncharged molecules, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water, can diffuse through the membrane on their own. Ions and larger molecules need transport proteins because of their charge or size.

Membrane transport also happens inside plant cells. The central vacuole stores resources and helps manage the cell’s internal environment. Its membrane, called the tonoplast, contains active and passive transport proteins just like the plasma membrane. These proteins regulate movement between the cytoplasm and the vacuole.

The vacuole can store sugar for later use and keep ions out of the cytoplasm. It also pumps protons into the vacuole, which makes the inside acidic. This acidic environment helps break down unwanted or toxic substances that enter the cell. In this way, the vacuole supports both storage and cleanup.

Movement across the tonoplast also affects turgor pressure, the force that pushes the plasma membrane against the cell wall. Turgor pressure helps give the plant its structure. The size of the vacuole changes as solutes move through channels and transporters. Water moves passively to balance solute concentrations, and it can move faster through aquaporins, which are water channels that open and close in response to cellular signals. During drought, the vacuole shrinks, turgor pressure drops, and the plant may wilt.
