Introduction to Plant Diversity

On early Earth, the continents were barren. Over time, early land plants evolved from green algal ancestors in water and gradually colonized land.Today, continents support microorganisms, insects, plants, and animals, many of which depend on land plants for survival.All land plants, from mosses to seed-bearing plants, share several key characteristics.First, these plants are multicellular eukaryotes.Second, plant cells contain chloroplasts. These are membrane-bound organelles that contain the photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll in structures called thylakoids.Chlorophyll absorbs light energy from the sun. Plants use this energy, along with carbon dioxide and water, to carry out photosynthesis and make carbohydrates as food.Third, plant cells have a cellulose-rich cell wall outside the plasma membrane.All plants have a life cycle called alternation of generations. In this cycle, the plant alternates between two multicellular stages: the gametophyte, a haploid stage, and the sporophyte, a diploid stage.In the gametophyte stage, the male sex organs, called antheridia, and the female sex organs, called archegonia, produce haploid gametes through mitosis. Antheridia produce sperm, while archegonia produce eggs. During fertilization, these gametes fuse to form a diploid zygote.The zygote then divides by mitosis and develops into the diploid sporophyte.The sporophyte produces haploid spores by meiosis. These spores then grow into haploid gametophytes, completing the life cycle.Land plants are classified into two major groups: nonvascular plants and vascular plants.Nonvascular plants include liverworts, mosses, and hornworts. Vascular plants are further classified into seedless vascular plants and seed plants. Each of these groups contains many thousands of species.Over time, these groups evolved different traits, from vascular tissue to fruits. Together, these adaptations helped plants spread across most terrestrial biomes.

From Water to LandKingdom Plantae first appeared about 470 million years ago as charophyte green algae transitioned from water to land. This land was a relatively uncolonized environment with ample resources. Terrestrial environments also offered more light and carbon dioxide, required by plants to grow and survive.However, the stark differences between land and sea posed a formidable challenge to early colonizing species, prompting many new adaptations that have resulted in the wide variety of plant forms observed today.One early adaptation was the development of an outer waxy coating, called a cuticle. Cuticles serve to protect plants from desiccation by trapping moisture inside. However, this adaptation prevented the direct exchange of gases across the surface of plants. As a result, pores developed on the outer surfaces of plants that allowed the absorption of carbon dioxide and the release of oxygen.Additional structures were necessary to facilitate the transport of water and nutrients from the soil to the superior portions of the plant. As a result, vascular tissue developed that not only serves to transport water and nutrients to all areas of the plant but also provides structural support as stems grow taller and stronger.To accommodate reproduction on land, terrestrial plants developed gametangia&#x2014;reproductive structures that protect gametes and embryos from the harsh environment outside the plant. In males, this structure is called the antheridium, while in females, it is called the archegonium.Different strategies evolved to facilitate the transport of sperm from the antheridia to the eggs within the archegonia. These include sperm swimming from one structure to the next, or pollen being carried by the wind or transported by pollinators like bees and birds. The specific mode used is unique to each classification of plants. Following fertilization, eggs are retained within the archegonia to protect and nourish the developing embryo, or sporophyte.Another major reproductive adaptation was the generation of seeds. Though not all terrestrial plants are seeded, seeds are advantageous for many reasons. Without these structures, plants require moist environments to transport gametes from one place to another. Often in seedless plants, spores are approximately the same size (homosporous) and travel independently. However, seeded plants generally contain small male spores adapted to be highly mobile, called pollen grains, which travel to female gametophytes to deliver sperm via a pollen tube to the egg. Once fertilization occurs, a seed forms that contains the plant embryo and a supply of nutrients.These adaptations have created plant species well adapted to life in terrestrial environments.Major Lineages of PlantsThough countless varieties of plants now exist, all can be divided into one of three groups: non-vascular, vascular seedless, and vascular seeded. Non-vascular plants are the most ancestral and least complex, including mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. These plants lack vascular tissue (xylem and phloem); water and nutrients move through the plant mainly by diffusion, osmosis, and capillary action. Next, the vascular seedless plants include ferns and horsetails, and were the first group to evolve a vascular transport system. The last group, vascular-seeded plants, includes all remaining species. This group is the most diverse and occupies the broadest range of habitats, and is split into two major sub-groups, angiosperms and gymnosperms. Angiosperms include all flowering and fruiting plants, with pollen carried by the wind or transported by pollinators. Gymnosperms are non-flowering plants, including conifers, cycads, and ginkgo trees. These species produce bare seeds not protected by fruit and pollen is carried by wind.

Plant adaptations for life on land explain how Kingdom Plantae moved from water to land about 410 million years ago. This shift happened when green algae began colonizing a new environment that had not been widely occupied. Land offered more light and carbon dioxide for growth, but it also created major challenges for early plants.

One key adaptation was the cuticle, a waxy outer layer that helps prevent water loss. It traps moisture inside the plant. But it also limited direct gas exchange across the plant surface. To solve that problem, pores formed on the outside of plants so carbon dioxide could enter and oxygen could leave.

Plants also needed a way to move water and nutrients upward from the soil. Vascular tissue evolved for this job. It transports water and nutrients throughout the plant and gives stems support as they grow taller and stronger. Reproduction on land brought another challenge, so terrestrial plants developed gametangia, which are structures that protect gametes and embryos from the dry environment outside the plant. In males, this structure is called antheridia, and in females, it is called archegonia.

Different plants use different ways to move sperm from antheridia to eggs in archegonia. In some cases, sperm swim from one structure to the next. In others, wind carries them, or pollinators such as bees and birds transport them. After fertilization, eggs stay inside the archegonia, where the developing embryo, or sporophyte, is protected and nourished.

Seeds were another major step in plant evolution on land. Not all terrestrial plants have seeds, but seeds help plants survive in dry environments. Seedless plants often need moist conditions because male and female spores are about the same size and both travel. Seeded plants usually produce small male spores called pollen grains. These are highly mobile and move to female gametophytes, where sperm is delivered directly to the egg. After fertilization, a seed forms and contains the embryo plus a nutrient supply.

These adaptations produced the many plant forms seen today. Plant species are grouped into three major lineages: non-vascular, vascular seedless, and vascular seeded. Non-vascular plants are the most ancestral and least complex. They include mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. Vascular seedless plants include ferns and horsetails, and they were the first plants to evolve a vascular transport system.

The most diverse group is the vascular seeded plants, which occupy the broadest range of habitats. This group is split into angiosperms and gymnosperms. Angiosperms are flowering and fruiting plants, and their pollen is carried by wind or by pollinators. Gymnosperms are non-flowering plants such as conifers, cycads, and ginkgo trees.
