Seedless Vascular Plants

Seedless vascular plants are one of the three major plant groups on Earth, along with nonvascular plants and seed plants.They were among the first plants to develop specialized vascular tissues, which allowed them to grow taller than seedless nonvascular plants.These plants share traits with both nonvascular plants, such as mosses, and seed plants, such as conifers and flowering plants.Modern seedless vascular plants include two major lineages: lycophytes and monilophytes.Lycophytes include clubmosses, spikemosses, and quillworts, although none of these are true mosses, which are nonvascular plants. Monilophytes include ferns, horsetails, whisk ferns, and other members.Like all plants, they show alternation of generations, cycling between a haploid gametophyte and a diploid sporophyte.These plants reproduce through spores, like nonvascular plants, instead of forming seeds like seed plants.For example, in ferns, the dominant stage is the sporophyte. On the undersides of the leaves, there are often many sori.Each sorus is a cluster of sporangia where haploid spores are produced. When the sporangia mature, they open and release spores.After dispersal, each spore undergoes mitosis and forms a small, free-living haploid gametophyte.Some seedless vascular plants have bisexual gametophytes that contain both antheridia, the male reproductive organs, and archegonia, the female reproductive organs. Antheridia produce haploid sperm, and archegonia produce haploid eggs through mitosis.Because the sperm are flagellated, fertilization still depends on water, as it does in nonvascular plants. The sperm swim by following chemical signals released by the egg.Since both gametes come from the same haploid gametophyte, self-fertilization can reduce genetic variation. Many ferns reduce self-fertilization by having male and female structures mature at different times.Finally, the fertilized egg develops into a new diploid sporophyte, completing the life cycle.Seedless vascular plants have life cycles dominated by sporophytes, like seed plants. However, unlike those of the other major plant groups, their smaller gametophytes can live independently and do not nourish the sporophyte or depend on it for nourishment.The key feature of seedless vascular plants is their specialized vascular tissue system, which is similar to that of seed plants. This adaptation allows them to transport water, nutrients, and other organic materials and to grow larger than nonvascular plants.

Seedless Vascular Plants Were the First Tall Plants on Earth

Today, seedless vascular plants are represented by monilophytes and lycophytes. Ferns&#x2014;the most common seedless vascular plants&#x2014;are monilophytes. Whisk ferns (and their relatives) and horsetails are also monilophytes. Lycophytes include club mosses, spikemosses, and quillworts&#x2014;none of which are true mosses.

Unlike nonvascular plants, vascular plants&#x2014;including seedless vascular plants&#x2014;have an extensive network of vascular tissue comprised of xylem and phloem. Most seedless vascular plants also have true roots and leaves. Furthermore, the life cycles of seedless vascular plants are dominated by diploid spore-producing sporophytes, rather than gametophytes.

However, like nonvascular plants, seedless vascular plants reproduce with spores rather than seeds. Seedless vascular plants are also typically more reproductively successful in moist environments because their sperm require a film of water to reach the eggs.

The Life Cycle of Seedless Vascular Plants

Like animals, seedless vascular plants (and other plants) alternate between meiosis and fertilization during reproduction. Meiosis is a cell division process that produces haploid cells&#x2014;which contain one complete set of chromosomes&#x2014;from a diploid cell&#x2014;which contains two complete sets of chromosomes. Fertilization, by contrast, produces a diploid cell called a zygote through the fusion of haploid cells called gametes&#x2014;sperm and eggs.

In most animals, only the diploid stage is multicellular, and gametes are the only haploid cells. Plants, however, alternate between haploid and diploid stages that are both multicellular; this is called alternation of generations. Alternation of generations is a feature of all sexually reproducing plants, but the relative size and prominence of the haploid and diploid stages differ among plants.

In seedless vascular plants (as well as seed plants), the diploid stage of the life cycle&#x2014;the sporophyte&#x2014;is dominant. For example, what most people recognize as a fern is the large, independent fern sporophyte. Sporophytes produce haploid cells called spores through meiosis.

A spore can germinate and develop into a gametophyte&#x2014;the haploid stage of the life cycle&#x2014;through mitosis. Gametophytes produce egg and sperm cells through mitosis (unlike animals, which produce gametes through meiosis). Most seedless vascular plants produce one type of spore that gives rise to a bisexual gametophyte. The gametophytes are smaller and less structurally complex than the sporophytes, but they can photosynthesize and do not depend on the sporophyte for nourishment or protection.

Egg and sperm cells fuse through fertilization, forming a diploid zygote. The zygote divides through mitosis to generate the familiar, fronded fern sporophyte&#x2014;continuing the cycle.

Seedless vascular plants include ferns, horsetails, whisk ferns, and lycophytes. Ferns are the most common example. Whisk ferns and their relatives, along with horsetails, are monilophytes. Lycophytes include club mosses, spikemosses, and quillworts, and none of these are true mosses.

Seedless vascular plants differ from nonvascular plants because they have vascular tissue. This tissue includes xylem and phloem, which move water and nutrients through the plant. Most seedless vascular plants also have true roots and leaves. These features helped them become the first tall plants on Earth.

Their life cycle is dominated by the diploid sporophyte, not the gametophyte. The sporophyte is the familiar fern plant that people usually notice. Seedless vascular plants still reproduce with spores, not seeds. They also do better in moist places because sperm need a thin film of water to reach the eggs.

Like animals and other plants, these plants alternate between meiosis and fertilization. Meiosis makes haploid cells, which have one set of chromosomes, from a diploid cell, which has two sets. Fertilization joins haploid gametes, such as sperm and eggs, to form a diploid zygote. In plants, both the haploid and diploid stages can be multicellular, which is called alternation of generations.

In seedless vascular plants, the diploid stage is the larger and more noticeable one. The sporophyte makes haploid spores by meiosis. A spore can grow into a gametophyte by mitosis. The gametophyte is smaller and less complex, but it can still photosynthesize and does not depend on the sporophyte for food or protection.

Most seedless vascular plants make one kind of spore. That spore develops into a bisexual gametophyte, which produces both egg and sperm cells by mitosis. When fertilization happens, a diploid zygote forms. The zygote then divides by mitosis and grows into the familiar fronded fern sporophyte, continuing the cycle.
