The Soil Ecosystem

Der Boden, der oft auch als die Haut
der Erde bezeichnet wird, ist mehr als nur Erde.
Er ist ein komplexes
&#xD6;kosystem, das abiotische
Faktoren wie beispielsweise
anorganische Mineralien, Luft,
und Wasser beinhaltet.
Der Boden kann auch viele
biotische Faktoren, wie Bakterien,
Fungi und andere Organismen enthalten.
Die anorganischen Mineralien
machen 40 &#x2013; 45%
des Bodenvolumens aus und
bereichern das &#xD6;kosystem
mit N&#xE4;hrstoffen wie Nitraten,
Phosphaten und Kalium.
Luft und Wasser zusammen machen
50 bis 50% des Bodenvolumens aus.
Luft bereichert den Boden mit
Gasen wie Sauerstoff, Stickstoff
und Kohlendioxid.
Wobei Wasser den N&#xE4;hrstoffen hilft,
den Boden zu durchdringen.
Die Organismen, die
5 bis 10% des Bodenvolumens umfassen,
interagieren miteinander
und mit den abiotischen Faktoren
zur Ern&#xE4;hrung.
Boden besteht aus ausgepr&#xE4;gten
Horizonten oder Schichten.
Die Humusschicht, oder O-Region, ist
am wichtigsten f&#xFC;r das Pflanzenwachstum,
da er reich an Humus ist - organischem
Material, das aus der mikrobiellen
Zersetzung von toten
Pflanzen- und Tiersubstanzen gebildet wird.
Humus bereichert den Boden
mit N&#xE4;hrstoffen,
verbessert die Feuchtigkeits-
und Luftretention,
und lockt Organismen
wie Erdw&#xFC;rmer an,
was zu einer weichen und
por&#xF6;sen Bodentextur f&#xFC;hrt.
Die Textur und
Zusammensetzung der Humusschicht
machen den Boden zu einem idealen Substrat
zur Samenkeimung und
f&#xFC;r das Pflanzenwachstum.
Gesunder Boden wird
als fruchtbar
und als eine wertvolle nat&#xFC;rliche Ressource
f&#xFC;r die Landwirtschaft erachtet.
Wachsende Pflanzen verbrauchen allerdings
Bodenn&#xE4;hrstoffe
und ersch&#xF6;pfen damit seine Fruchtbarkeit.
Das Boden&#xF6;kosystem erneuert
die Bodenn&#xE4;hrstoffe auf nat&#xFC;rliche Weise
durch Prozesse wie
die Dekomposition
von organischem Material.
Solche vitalen &#xF6;kologischen
Funktionen sind
als &#xD6;kosystemleistungen bekannt.
Aufgrund erh&#xF6;hter menschlicher
Aktivit&#xE4;t &#xFC;bersteigt die Umweltverschmutzung
bei weitem den Grad, zu dem der Boden
sein &#xD6;kosystem wiederherstellen kann.
Zum Beispiel sind Mikrokunststoffe,
die von der Fragmentierung
von Plastikabf&#xE4;llen
stammen,
toxisch f&#xFC;r lebende Organismen,
und sie beeintr&#xE4;chtigen die Bodentextur,
wobei sie daher das
Recycling der N&#xE4;hrstoffe
und das Funktioneren
des &#xD6;kosystems alterieren.
W&#xE4;hrend der globale Klimawandel
vermehrt die Boden&#xF6;kosysteme
beeintr&#xE4;chtigt und die Nachfrage nach
Nahrung schnell ansteigt,
sind Bodenmanagement und -Konzentration
grundlegend wichtig, um das Leben
auf unserem Planeten zu erhalten.

Pflanzen erhalten anorganische Mineralstoffe und Wasser aus dem Boden, der als nat&#xFC;rliches Medium f&#xFC;r Landpflanzen wirkt. Die Zusammensetzung und Qualit&#xE4;t des Bodens h&#xE4;ngt nicht nur von den chemischen Bestandteilen ab, sondern auch von der Anwesenheit lebender Organismen. Im Allgemeinen enthalten B&#xF6;den drei Hauptbestandteile:
 
 <ol>
 <li>Anorganische Mineralstoffe, die etwa 40 bis 45 Prozent des Bodenvolumens ausmachen.</li>
 <li>Organische Substanz, auch Humus genannt, die etwa 5 Prozent des Bodenvolumens ausmacht.</li>
 <li>Wasser und Luft, die etwa 50 Prozent des Bodenvolumens einnehmen.</li>
 </ol>
 
 Gesunde B&#xF6;den haben eine ausreichende Menge an Luft, Wasser, Mineralstoffen und organischen Stoffen, um das Pflanzenwachstum zu f&#xF6;rdern.
 
 Aufgrund seiner physikalischen Struktur besteht der Boden aus vier unterschiedlichen Schichten:
 
 <ol>
 <li>O-Horizont oder organischer Horizont</li>
 <li>A-Horizont oder mineralischer Oberboden</li>
 <li>B-Horizont oder mineralischer Unterboden</li>
 <li>C-Horizont oder mineralischer Untergrund</li>
 </ol>
 
 Der O-Horizont besteht aus frisch zersetzenden organischen Stoffen - ein Ergebnis der Zersetzung durch Pflanzen, Tiere oder Mikroorganismen. Es ist auch als Oberboden bekannt. Diese Humusschicht ist wichtig f&#xFC;r die Verbesserung der Bodenfruchtbarkeit, Feuchtigkeit, und Luftbeibehaltung. Obwohl der Humus einen kleineren Prozentsatz des gesamten Bodenvolumens ausmacht, ist er dennoch unerl&#xE4;sslich.
 
 A-Horizont ist eine Mischung aus organischen und anorganischen Komponenten und ist der Beginn der echten mineralischen Boden, die durch Verwitterung von Gestein gebildet werden.
 
 Der B-Horizont, oder Unterboden, ist eine Schicht aus feinem Lehm, die weniger fruchtbar als der Oberboden ist. Es ist reich an Feuchtigkeit und weist weniger biologische Aktivit&#xE4;t als der Oberboden auf.
 
 Der C-Horizont umfasst das darunter liegende verwitterte Gestein. Unter dem C-Horizont liegt in der Regel das Grundgestein, das als Ausgangsmaterial der Bodenbildung fungiert.
 
 Bodenbildung
 
 Der Boden bildet sich als Folge physikalischer, chemischer und biologischer Verwitterungsprozesse, die auf das Grundgestein wirken. Bei physikalischer Verwitterung bildet sich der Boden durch mechanische Wirkungen wie Temperatur&#xE4;nderung, Wind, Frost, Abrieb oder Erdbeben, wobei eine oder alle zu dem Zusammenbruch des Grundgesteins f&#xFC;hren k&#xF6;nnen. Bei chemischer Verwitterung reagiert das Gestein mit Wasser, S&#xE4;ure oder anderen chemischen Komponenten. Die biologische Verwitterung hingegen wird durch w&#xFC;hlende Tiere und Pflanzenwurzeln beeinflusst, die in die Risse des Gesteins hineinwachsen und es spalten.
 
 Insgesamt wird die Art des Bodens, der produziert wird, von f&#xFC;nf haupts&#xE4;chlichen Faktoren bestimmt &#x2013; die Zusammensetzung des Ausgangsmaterials, die vorhandenen lebenden Organismen, die klimatischen Bedingungen, die Topographie und die Zeit. Die Wechselwirkung zwischen diesen Faktoren erzeugt eine unendliche Vielfalt von B&#xF6;den auf der ganzen Erde.

Soil supplies plants with water and inorganic minerals. It is the natural medium for land plants, and its quality depends on both chemical makeup and living organisms in the soil. Healthy soil contains enough air, water, minerals, and organic matter to support plant growth.

Soil is made of three major components. Inorganic mineral matter makes up about 40 to 45 percent of soil volume. Organic matter, also called humus, makes up about 5 percent. Water and air fill about 50 percent of the volume.

Soil also has four distinct layers based on its structure. The O-horizon, or topsoil, contains freshly decomposing material from plants, animals, and microorganisms. This humus layer helps improve soil fertility, moisture, and air retention. The A-horizon is a mixture of organic and inorganic material. It is the start of true mineral soil formed by rock weathering.

The B-horizon, or subsoil, is a layer of fine clay. It is less fertile than topsoil, but it is rich in moisture. It also has less biological activity than the upper layers. The C-horizon is the weathered rock below the subsoil. Under the C-horizon is bedrock, which serves as the parent material for soil formation.

Soil forms through physical, chemical, and biological weathering of bedrock. Physical weathering includes temperature change, wind, frost, abrasion, and earthquakes. Chemical weathering happens when rock reacts with water, acid, or other chemical components. Biological weathering is caused by burrowing animals and plant roots that split rock as they grow into cracks.

The kind of soil that develops depends on five interacting factors: parent material, living organisms, climate, topography, and time. These factors work together to create many different soils across the Earth.
