Sowohl Bakterien als auch Pilze haben symbiotische Beziehungen mit Pflanzen entwickelt, die der Art helfen in verschiedenen Umgebungen zu gedeihen.
 
 Die gesamten Bakterien, die innerhalb und au&#xDF;erhalb der Pflanzenwurzeln leben, werden als Rhizosph&#xE4;re bezeichnet. Diese bodenbewohnenden Bakterienarten sind unglaublich vielf&#xE4;ltig. Obwohl einige pathogen sein k&#xF6;nnen, f&#xF6;rdern die meisten die Gesundheit der Pflanzen. Im Gegenzug erhalten die Bakterien Nahrung in Form von Kohlenhydraten, Aminos&#xE4;uren und Nukleins&#xE4;uren von den Pflanzen.
 
 Diese Bakterien k&#xF6;nnen auch Rhizobakterien genannt werden und k&#xF6;nnen die Pflanzen sch&#xFC;tzen, indem sie Antibiotika produzieren oder giftige Metalle des Boden aufnehmen. Dar&#xFC;ber hinaus helfen die Bakterien den Pflanzen auf ansonsten unbrauchbare N&#xE4;hrstoffvorr&#xE4;te im Boden zu zugreifen. Zum Beispiel fehlt Pflanzen die molekulare Maschinerie, um Stickstoff direkt aus der Atmosph&#xE4;re zu nutzen. Stattdessen nehmen sie Stickstoff in Form von Ammonium (NH4+) und Nitrat (NO3-) auf, welche durch bodenerhaltende Bakterien erzeugt werden.
 
 W&#xE4;hrend eines Prozesses, der als Stickstofffixierung bezeichnet wird, wandeln bodenbewohnende Bakterien den atmosph&#xE4;rischen Stickstoff in Ammoniak um. Die Stickstofffixierung erfordert gro&#xDF;e Mengen an ATP, die Bakterien aus pflanzlichen Kohlenhydraten herstellen. Andere Bakteriengruppen wandeln Ammoniak in einem zweistufigen Prozesses, der Nitrifikation, in Nitrat um. Diese Prozesse versorgen Pflanzen mit Formen an Stickstoff f&#xFC;r die Synthese von Proteine und Nukleins&#xE4;uren.
 
 Pilze nehmen auch an symbiotischen Beziehungen mit Pflanzen teil. Wissenschaftler glauben, dass die mutualistische Symbiose zwischen Pflanzen und Mykorrhizapilze eine wichtige Adaption f&#xFC;r die erfolgreiche Besiedlung des Lands war, da sie den fr&#xFC;hen Pflanzen half, wesentliche Elemente aus dem Boden aufzunehmen. Moderne Mykorrhiza tragen zur Wassergewinnung, Wachstumsfaktor-Signal&#xFC;bertragung und zum Pflanzenschutz bei. Ektomykorrhiza verdecken Wurzeln und helfen, Wasser und Mineralien zu absorbieren. Gleichzeitig werden arbuskul&#xE4;re Mykorrhiza in das Wurzelgewebe eingebettet, was den Kontakt zwischen den Pflanzenzellen und den verzweigten Filamenten des Pilzes, den Hyphen, erh&#xF6;ht.

Soil microbes help plants get nutrients, water, and protection. Plants can make their own food by photosynthesis, but they still depend on organisms in the soil to get the nutrients they need to work properly. Bacteria and fungi form symbiotic relationships with plants, which helps both partners survive in many environments.

The bacteria living in and around plant roots are called the rhizosphere. This community is very diverse. Some bacteria can cause disease, but most help plant health. In return, the bacteria receive carbohydrates, amino acids, and nucleic acids from the plant. Rhizobacteria can also protect plants by making antibiotics or by absorbing toxic metals in the soil.

Bacteria also help plants reach nutrients they cannot use on their own. Plants cannot use nitrogen directly from the atmosphere. They need nitrogen as ammonium or nitrate instead. Soil bacteria make these forms through nitrogen fixation and nitrification. During nitrogen fixation, bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia. This process needs a lot of ATP, which bacteria get from plant-provided carbohydrates. Other bacteria then turn ammonia into nitrate in a two-step process called nitrification. Plants use these nitrogen forms to build proteins and nucleic acids.

Fungi also support plant life through mycorrhizae, which are mutualistic fungi that connect with roots. Scientists think this relationship helped early plants colonize land by improving access to soil nutrients. Today, mycorrhizae help with water uptake, growth factor signaling, and plant protection. Ectomycorrhizae cover roots and help absorb water and minerals. Arbuscular mycorrhizae grow inside root tissue and increase contact between plant cells and the fungus’s branching hyphae.
