Wir messen, um einen wahren Wert zu erhalten. Es wird jedoch immer ein gewisses Maß an Unsicherheit und Fehler geben. Der gemessene Wert ist unsere beste Schätzung des tatsächlichen Wertes, der uns oft unbekannt ist. Der Fehler ist die Differenz zwischen den gemessenen und den tatsächlichen Werten. Die Messunsicherheit beschreibt den Bereich, in dem wir es für wahrscheinlich halten, dass der tatsächliche Wert liegt. Bei der Aufzeichnung von Messungen ist es wichtig, die entsprechende Anzahl an signifikanten Stellen beizubehalten.
Signifikanzzahlen sind die Ziffern in einer Messung, die eine Bedeutung haben. Die letzte aufgezeichnete Ziffer definiert den Grad der Unsicherheit. Alle Zahlen außer führenden und nachfolgenden Nullen sind signifikant. Und nachfolgende Nullen sind wichtig, wenn ihnen ein Dezimalpunkt vorangestellt ist.
Bei einer Längenmessung mit einem Lineal sehen wir beispielsweise, dass die Länge mindestens einen Zoll, aber sicherlich nicht 2 Zoll beträgt. Die erste signifikante Ziffer ist also eins. Der nächste Teilstrich stellt 0,1 Zoll dar und ist ebenfalls signifikant.
Eine Aufzeichnung von 1,1 Zoll hat zwei signifikante Ziffern und impliziert, dass die Unsicherheit an der zehnten Stelle liegt. Die wahre Breite liegt jedoch zwischen zwei Teilstrichen. Die Unsicherheit liegt hier also im Hundertstelbereich, da die Länge mit 1,15 Zoll angegeben wird.
Wenn Sie Berechnungen mit Messwerten durchführen, denken Sie daran, keine Berechnungen mit einer höheren Auflösung als der ursprünglichen Messung durchzuführen. Diese zusätzlichen Ziffern sind nicht signifikant und sollten nicht aufgenommen werden. Wenn wir zum Beispiel die Fläche des Quadrats mit einer Seitenlänge von 1,15 berechnen, sehen wir, dass die Länge drei signifikante Ziffern hat. Die Antwort sollte also auch drei signifikante Zahlen enthalten.
Die berechnete Fläche von 1,3225 Zoll im Quadrat hat fünf Ziffern und bringt eine Sicherheit in die Berechnung, die in der ursprünglichen Messung nicht vorhanden war. Somit ist die korrekte Fläche 1,32 Zoll im Quadrat.

Bei den meisten Flüssigkeiten wölbt sich die Oberfläche bei Glasbehältern an den Rändern nach oben. Diese Art von gekrümmter Flüssigkeitsoberfläche wird als konkaver Meniskus bezeichnet. Wenn sich die Ränder der Flüssigkeit nach unten krümmen, spricht man von einem konvexen Meniskus. Bei der Messung des Flüssigkeitsvolumens ist der Referenzpunkt für die Oberseite der Flüssigkeit die Unterseite eines konkaven Meniskus oder die Oberseite eines konvexen Meniskus. Um die Position des Meniskus genau zu bestimmen, werden die Flüssigkeitsvolumina abgelesen, indem die Oberfläche der Flüssigkeit von der Seite auf Augenhöhe betrachtet wird. Auf Glaswaren ist in der Regel die Messunsicherheit aufgedruckt. Um Volumenmessungen genau aufzuzeichnen, müssen Sie sowohl das Inkrement als auch die Unsicherheit berücksichtigen. Zum Beispiel würde eine präzise Volumenmessung in einem 100 mL Messzylinder mit 1 mL Schritten und einer Unsicherheit von ± 0,5 mL auf die Zehntelstelle (000,0 mL ± 0,5 mL) aufgezeichnet werden. <h4>Signifikante Zahlen</h4>
Signifikative Zahlen sind die Zahlen in einem Wert, die aussagekräftig oder wesentlich sind, um diesen Wert mit der entsprechenden Genauigkeit auszudrücken. Alle Zahlen außer führenden Nullen (0,001), nachgestellten Nullen (1.000) oder Multiplikatoren in wissenschaftlicher Notation (10x) sind immer signifikant.
Führende Nullen sind nie signifikant, da sie entfernt werden können, indem die Zahl entweder in wissenschaftlicher Schreibweise oder, wenn es sich um eine SI-Einheit handelt, in kleinere Einheiten umgeschrieben wird. Zum Beispiel gibt es nur drei signifikante Zahlen im Wert 0,00123 m, da er entweder in 1,23 × 10-3 m oder 1,23 mm umgeschrieben werden kann, ohne dass Informationen verloren gehen. Beachten Sie, dass der Skalierungsfaktor zwischen verschiedenen Vielfachen derselben SI-Einheit keinen Einfluss auf die Anzahl der signifikanten Stellen hat.

Nachfolgende Nullen in einer Zahl, die ohne Dezimaltrennzeichen geschrieben wird, werden als unbedeutend angesehen, sofern sie nicht anders gekennzeichnet sind. Es gibt verschiedene Konventionen für die Markierung signifikanter Nullen in diesen Fällen, aber um Mehrdeutigkeiten zu vermeiden, ist es ratsam, diese Werte in wissenschaftlicher Schreibweise umzuschreiben. Wenn die Messung in SI-Einheiten angegeben wird, verwenden Sie größere Einheiten.
Die Genauigkeit einer Messung begrenzt die Genauigkeit aller daraus berechneten Werte. Ein berechneter Wert hat die gleiche Anzahl signifikanter Ziffern wie die am wenigsten genaue Messung oder der Wert, der bei der Berechnung verwendet wird. Wenn das Ergebnis zu viele signifikante Zahlen enthält, wird es auf die entsprechende Genauigkeit gerundet. Wenn das Ergebnis zu wenige signifikante Ziffern enthält, wird es mit signifikanten nachgestellten Nullen erweitert, um die Genauigkeit zu erhalten. Die signifikanten Zahlen experimentell abgeleiteter Werte, wie Molmasse, Dichte oder einige Einheitsumrechnungsfaktoren, müssen ebenfalls berücksichtigt werden, wenn sie in Berechnungen verwendet werden.
Die Anzahl der signifikanten Zahlen in einem berechneten Wert ist nicht durch physikalische oder mathematische Konstanten in Formeln oder exakte Zahlen begrenzt, wie die Anzahl der in einem Experiment erfassten Datenpunkte. Die Formel zur Berechnung des Volumens einer Kugel lautet z. B. V = 4/3πr3. Die Anzahl der signifikanten Stellen im berechneten Volumen wird nur durch die Anzahl der signifikanten Stellen in der Radiusmessung r beeinflusst. 4/3 und π sind Konstanten, und 3 ist einfach die Notation für eine mathematische Operation.
Definierte Umrechnungsfaktoren werden ebenfalls als Konstanten behandelt. Zum Beispiel ist der Zoll als genau 25,4 Millimeter definiert; Daher hängt die Anzahl der signifikanten Stellen des umgerechneten Wertes nur von der ursprünglichen Messung ab. Prüfen Sie bei der Umrechnung zwischen Einheiten immer, ob der Umrechnungsfaktor genau definiert ist oder ein experimenteller Wert ist.
Für die einfache Addition und Subtraktion von Messungen verwenden wir die Signifikanzarithmetik, um die Anzahl der signifikanten Stellen zu bestimmen. In diesem Fall hat die Antwort so viele Nachkommastellen wie die Messung mit den wenigsten Nachkommastellen, unabhängig von der Anzahl der signifikanten Stellen. Somit sind 15.643,7 mL + 0,613 mL = 15.644,3 mL.
Bei mehrstufigen Berechnungen oder komplexen Gleichungen, die Sie zum Lösen in kleinere Teile zerlegen, sollten Sie mindestens ein oder zwei unbedeutende Zahlen auf den Zwischenwerten behalten. Wenn Sie z. B. die Werte des Zählers und des Nenners eines Bruchs getrennt berechnen, bevor Sie sie dividieren, sollten Sie die unbedeutenden Zahlen des Zählers und des Nenners beibehalten, wenn Sie sie dividieren. Measuring with accuracy in the lab starts with careful records, the right tools, and correct reading of data. Scientists use lab notebooks to record how an experiment was done. These notes include the amounts of materials used and each step of the procedure. Without that record, an experiment cannot be repeated in the same way.

Balances and glassware are used to measure solids and liquids for experiments. The precision of a measurement depends on the equipment used. Digital balances show the maximum precision they can support. For rulers and graduated glassware, precision depends on the increment, which is the smallest distance between two marks.

Liquid levels must also be read correctly. Most liquids curve upward at the edges in glass containers. This curved surface is called a concave meniscus. When the edges curve downward, it is called a convex meniscus. To measure volume, the reference point is the bottom of a concave meniscus or the top of a convex meniscus. The reading should be taken from the side at eye level. Looking from above or below can make the level seem higher or lower than it really is.

Graduated and volumetric glassware are designed for different jobs. Volumetric glassware measures one specific volume and has only one mark. Graduated glassware measures a range of volumes and has many marks, or graduations, at regular intervals. When the meniscus reference point touches the mark, the glassware is holding the volume defined by that mark. Both types may also include manufacturer information about precision.

Manufacturers calibrate equipment so measurements stay within a stated range of uncertainty. A high-precision analytical balance may read to four decimal places, such as 0.0000 g, with an uncertainty of ±0.0001 g. That means a reading of 0.0345 g could represent a true value between 0.0344 g and 0.0346 g. Glassware usually has its uncertainty printed on it. For a 100 mL graduated cylinder with 1 mL increments and an uncertainty of ±0.5 mL, the volume should be recorded to the tenths place.

Temperature also affects volume, so calibrated glassware lists the temperature it is made for. Glassware can be calibrated to contain, or TC, or to deliver, or TD. TC glassware holds the stated volume when filled to the mark, but some liquid remains after pouring. This is why volumetric flasks are usually TC and are often used to prepare solutions, since solution concentration depends on volume accuracy. TD glassware dispenses the stated volume and should not be emptied completely. Graduated and volumetric pipettes are typically TD and are useful for transferring an exact volume to another container.

Recording numbers correctly also requires understanding uncertainty and significant figures. Unless stated otherwise, uncertainty is assumed to be on the scale of the last digit. If a ruler or glassware has no known uncertainty, estimate it as half of the smallest increment. Significant figures are the digits that are meaningful for the precision of a value. Leading zeroes are not significant, while trailing zeroes are significant when they appear before or after a decimal point. A number written without a decimal point may need scientific notation to avoid ambiguity.

Calculated values must match the precision of the measurements used to find them. The result should have the same number of significant figures as the least precise value in the calculation. If the answer has too many significant figures, round it. If it has too few, add significant trailing zeroes to show the correct precision. Constants such as 4/3 and π in the sphere volume formula do not limit the number of significant figures, and exact conversion factors like 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters also do not. For addition and subtraction, the answer keeps the same number of decimal places as the least precise value. For multi-step problems, keep one or two extra digits during intermediate steps to reduce rounding error.
