Identifying Alcohols

Alcohols are a class of organic molecules possessing at least one hydroxyl functional group connected to a carbon atom. Methanol and ethanol are two familiar alcohols. Both are aliphatic alcohols, meaning that they are derived from a hydrocarbon and do not contain a benzene group.
There are three classifications of aliphatic alcohols. The first is a primary alcohol, where the hydroxyl group is connected to a carbon atom that is connected to one carbon-based, or alkyl, group. In a secondary alcohol, the hydroxyl group is connected to a carbon atom that has two alkyl groups. Finally, in a tertiary alcohol, the hydroxyl group is connected to a carbon atom with three alkyl groups.
Alcohols can also be aromatic, in which a hydroxyl group is connected directly to the carbon of a benzene ring. The simplest form of an aromatic alcohol is phenol. Compounds that contain phenol are known as phenol derivatives or phenols.
Certain reactions undergone by alcohols can be used to distinguish them based on visible differences in the reaction&#8217;s outcome. One such reaction is the ferric chloride test, which tests for the presence of phenols. When ferric chloride is added to a phenol, a purple iron-three-phenol complex forms. This is not observed when it is added to an aliphatic alcohol.
Another useful reaction is the Jones Test, which is used to identify primary and secondary aliphatic alcohols. Jones&#8217; reagent, a mix of sulfuric acid and chromium trioxide in water, is a strong oxidizing agent. It reacts with primary alcohols to form aldehydes &#8212; which then form carboxylic acids&#8212; and it reacts with secondary alcohols to form ketones. The addition of the Jones reagent to primary and secondary alcohols causes the solution to change colors from orange to dark green. Tertiary alcohols do not react with Jones&#8217; reagent because they are resistant to oxidation.
Finally, we can distinguish aliphatic alcohols with the Lucas test. Lucas&#8217; reagent, which is a mixture of zinc chloride and hydrochloric acid, reacts with secondary and tertiary alcohols through an SN1 nucleophilic substitution reaction. The zinc chloride coordinates to the hydroxyl oxygen to generate an excellent leaving group. Once eliminated, a positively charged carbocation remains. Then, a chlorine ion attacks the carbocation to form an alkyl chloride, which is insoluble in water and appears cloudy.
Tertiary alcohols react immediately with Lucas&#8217; reagent to form an oily layer at room temperature. Secondary alcohols give a positive result after a few seconds to a few minutes. Primary alcohols give a negative result unless they are heated.
In this lab, you will use the ferric chloride test, Jones test, and Lucas test to identify an unknown alcohol.

<h4>Alcohols</h4>
Alcohols are organic compounds that are amongst the most recognizable and familiar, as they have wide-ranging applications and uses in everyday life. Alcohols are organic molecules containing a hydroxyl functional group connected to an alkyl or aryl group (ROH). If the hydroxyl carbon only has a single R group, it is known as primary alcohol. If it has two R groups, it is a secondary alcohol, and if it has three R groups, it is a tertiary alcohol. Like many other organic compounds, alcohols can also be aromatic by containing a benzene ring. The simplest aromatic alcohol is phenol.
Identifying an alcohol in organic chemistry can be achieved by exploiting the different properties of the types of alcohols. While various instrumentation analysis methods, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) can be used, other qualitative tests can also be utilized. By coupling these tests together, the identity of an alcohol can be determined in a similar fashion to the way aldehydes and ketones can be identified.
<h4>Ferric Chloride Test</h4>
One method to differentiate between an aliphatic alcohol and an aromatic alcohol is by using iron(III) chloride. The iron chloride compound gives the solution a red-orange appearance. In the presence of an aromatic alcohol, like phenol, the chloride atoms are replaced by the aromatic alcohol, changing the coordination property of the center iron atom. This changes the color of the solution to a purple color. Aliphatic alcohols will not react with iron(III) chloride and, thus, the solution remains red-orange.
<h4>Jones Test</h4>
The Jones test utilizes chromium trioxide in the presence of sulfuric acid to act as a powerful oxidizing agent. In the presence of the Jones&#39; reagent, a primary alcohol is first converted into an aldehyde and then into a carboxylic acid, while a secondary alcohol will be oxidized into a ketone. The oxidation state of chromium is the key to this test. Chromium is in the +6 oxidation state in the Jones&#39; reagent. The Cr(VI) complexes in the reagent give it its bright reddish, orange color.
In the process of the reaction, chromium is reduced from Cr(VI) to the +3 oxidation state &#8212; Cr(III). First, the alcohol and chromic acid form a chromate ester. Then, a base (H2O) cleaves the C-H bond of the alcohol, forming the carbonyl group while reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(IV). The carbon of the alcohol undergoes a 2-electron oxidation, and the Cr(IV) undergoes a 2-electron reduction, so this is a reduction-oxidation step.
Cr(IV) participates in further oxidation steps and is eventually reduced to Cr(III). Cr(III) is often present as hexaaquachromium(III) ions &#8212; [Cr(H2O)6]3+ &#8212; and Cr(III) complexes, where H2O molecules are replaced by one or more sulphate ions &#8212; [Cr(H2O)5(SO4)]+. These complexes give Cr(III) the characteristic green color.
Tertiary alcohols do not react with chromium, and thus no precipitate is made, keeping the solution orange. Therefore, the Jones test can help differentiate primary and secondary alcohols from tertiary alcohols.
<h4>Lucas Test</h4>
The Lucas test utilizes zinc(II) chloride in the presence of hydrochloric acid as a reagent. In the presence of an alcohol, the Lucas reagent will halogenate the alcohol, making an insoluble product in aqueous solutions. The reaction rate for this is highly dependent on the formation of a carbocation caused by the loss of the hydroxyl as water. A carbocation formed by a primary alcohol is unstable, and thus will not readily occur. This results in no observable reaction at room temperature. A tertiary alcohol will form a stable carbocation, resulting in a rapid reaction upon the addition of the Lucas reagent. This results in a second phase appearing in the reaction mixture because the final halogenated product is insoluble in water. Secondary alcohols will form a less stable carbocation than tertiary alcohols, but the reaction will occur at room temperature in a matter of minutes. Therefore, the Lucas Test can help differentiate between primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols.

Alcohol tests can help sort alcohols by structure and reactivity. Alcohols are organic molecules with a hydroxyl group attached to an alkyl or aryl group, written as ROH. If the carbon with the hydroxyl group has one R group, the alcohol is primary. If it has two R groups, it is secondary. If it has three R groups, it is tertiary.

Alcohols can also be aromatic when they contain a benzene ring. Phenol is the simplest aromatic alcohol. To identify an alcohol, chemists can use its chemical behavior instead of relying only on instrument-based methods such as NMR. By combining several qualitative tests, the identity of an alcohol can be determined in a way similar to how aldehydes and ketones are identified.

The ferric chloride test helps tell aromatic alcohols from aliphatic alcohols. Iron(III) chloride starts as a red-orange solution. If an aromatic alcohol such as phenol is present, the chloride atoms are replaced and the solution turns purple. Aliphatic alcohols do not react in this test, so the color stays red-orange.

The Jones test uses chromium trioxide with sulfuric acid as a strong oxidizing reagent. A primary alcohol is oxidized first to an aldehyde and then to a carboxylic acid. A secondary alcohol is oxidized to a ketone. Chromium starts in the +6 oxidation state, which gives the reagent its reddish-orange color, and is reduced to Cr(III), which is green. Tertiary alcohols do not react, so the solution remains orange. This makes the Jones test useful for separating primary and secondary alcohols from tertiary alcohols.

The Lucas test uses zinc(II) chloride in hydrochloric acid. It halogenates the alcohol and produces an insoluble product in water. The test depends on carbocation formation when the hydroxyl group leaves as water. Primary alcohols do not show a visible reaction at room temperature because their carbocations are unstable. Tertiary alcohols react quickly because their carbocations are more stable, and a second layer appears. Secondary alcohols react more slowly and usually take a few minutes. This test helps distinguish primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols.

A. A working definition of matter is that it takes up space, has mass, and has measurable properties. Matter is comprised of atomic, subatomic, and elementary particles.

B. Electrons are key to defining chemical and some physical properties, reactivity, and molecular structures. Repeating (periodic) patterns of physical and chemical properties occur among elements that define groups of elements with similar properties. The periodic table displays the repeating patterns, which are related to the atom's outermost electrons. Atoms bond with each other to form compounds.

C. In a chemical reaction, one or more reactants are transformed into one or more new products. Many factors shape the nature of products and the rates of reaction. 

D. Carbon-based compounds are building-blocks of known life forms on earth and numerous useful natural and synthetic products.
