What is Matter?

Materie ist alles, was Masse hat und den Raum einnimmt.

Materie weist physikalische und chemische Eigenschaften auf. Physikalische Eigenschaften von Materie sind die Eigenschaften, die beobachtet und gemessen werden können, ohne ihre Identität und Zusammensetzung zu verändern, wie z. B. Masse, Farbe, Volumen, Dichte, Geschmack oder Aussehen.
Einige physikalische Eigenschaften, wie z. B. der Schmelzpunkt und der Gefrierpunkt, können gemessen werden, wenn die Materie von einem Aggregatzustand in einen anderen übergeht.
Chemische Eigenschaften wie Entflammbarkeit, Säure oder Toxizität werden nur gemessen, wenn sich die chemische Zusammensetzung eines Stoffes ändert.

Die Masse eines Objekts ist die Menge an Materie, die sich im Objekt befindet und ist unabhängig davon, ob sich das Objekt auf der Erde oder in der schwerelosen Umgebung des Weltraums befindet. Das Gewicht eines Objekts hingegen ist seine Masse, die durch die Schwerkraft beeinflusst wird. Dort, wo die Schwerkraft stark auf die Masse eines Objekts wirkt, ist sein Gewicht im Vergleich zu seinem Gewicht, wo die Schwerkraft weniger stark ist, größer. Ein Objekt von bestimmter Masse wiegt zum Beispiel auf dem Mond weniger als auf der Erde, weil die Anziehungskraft des Mondes geringer ist als die der Erde. Mit anderen Worten, das Gewicht ist variabel und wird von der Schwerkraft beeinflusst. Ein Stück Käse, das auf der Erde ein Pfund wiegt, wiegt auf dem Mond nur wenige Unzen. 

 Alle Materie in der Natur bestehen aus einer oder mehreren der 92 Grundsubstanzen, die Elemente genannt werden. Ein Element ist eine reine Substanz, die sich von allen anderen Materiearten unterscheidet, weil sie nicht durch gewöhnliche chemische Mittel erzeugt oder zerlegt werden kann. Die Hauptelemente, die den menschlichen Körper zusammensetzen, sind Sauerstoff (O), Kohlenstoff (C), Wasserstoff (H) und Stickstoff (N). Alle Elemente in unserem Körper stammen von den Lebensmitteln, die wir essen und der Luft, die wir atmen. Ein Atom ist die kleinste Menge eines Elements, die die einzigartigen Eigenschaften dieses Elements behält. 

 Die meiste Materie kommt in der Natur entweder als reine Substanzen oder als Gemische vor. Reine Substanzen haben eine konstante Zusammensetzung. Alle Proben einer reinen Substanz haben die gleiche Zusammensetzung und Eigenschaften. Reine Substanzen können in zwei Klassen unterteilt werden: Elemente und Verbindungen. Elemente sind grundlegende Substanzen, die nicht in einfachere Substanzen zerlegt werden können. In der Natur kommen Elemente selten allein vor. Stattdessen kombinieren sie sich zu Verbindungen. Eine Verbindung besteht aus zwei oder mehr Elementen, die durch chemische Bindungen verbunden sind. 

 Ein Gemisch besteht aus zwei oder mehr Arten von Materie, die in unterschiedlichen Mengen vorhanden sein können und durch physikalische Veränderungen, wie Verdampfung, getrennt werden können. Ein homogenes Gemisch, auch Lösung genannt, zeigt eine gleichmäßige Zusammensetzung und sieht visuell im ganzen gleich aus. Die Luft um uns herum ist ein homogenes Gemisch aus Stickstoff, Sauerstoff, Kohlendioxid, Wasserdampf und anderen Gasen. Ein Gemisch mit einer Zusammensetzung, die von Punkt zu Punkt variiert, wird als heterogenes Gemisch bezeichnet - zum Beispiel ein Gemisch aus Sand und Wasser.

Matter is the substance that makes up the universe, from a grain of sand to a star. Scientists define matter as anything that occupies space and has mass. Mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight depends on gravity.

Mass stays the same whether an object is on Earth or in the zero-gravity environment of outer space. Weight changes when gravity changes. An object weighs more where gravity is stronger and less where gravity is weaker. A piece of cheese that weighs a pound on Earth weighs only a few ounces on the moon.

All matter in the natural world is made of one or more of the 92 basic substances called elements. An element is a pure substance that cannot be created or broken down by ordinary chemical means. The main elements in the human body are oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen. We get these elements from the foods we eat and the air we breathe.

An atom is the smallest amount of an element that still keeps that element’s unique properties. Most matter in nature is found as either pure substances or mixtures. Pure substances have a constant composition, so every sample has the same makeup and properties.

Pure substances fall into two groups: elements and compounds. Elements are the basic substances that cannot be broken into simpler substances. In nature, elements rarely occur alone. They often combine to form compounds, which are made of two or more elements joined by chemical bonds.

A mixture contains two or more kinds of matter in varying amounts, and it can be separated by physical changes such as evaporation. A homogeneous mixture, also called a solution, has a uniform composition and looks the same throughout. Air is an example because it contains nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other gases.

A heterogeneous mixture has a composition that changes from place to place. Sand in water is one example. These classifications help explain how matter is organized in the natural world.
