Acids, Bases and Neutralization Reactions

Acids are compounds that dissociate into hydrogen ions and the corresponding anions in aqueous solutions. They are also referred to as proton donors because the H+&#160; is a lone proton.
When acids dissolve, they increase the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution, lowering the pH.
In the stomach, for instance, hydrochloric acid dissociates into a proton and a chloride ion, maintaining the acidic pH essential for digestion.
Bases are substances that increase the concentration of hydroxide ions in a solution. When bases dissolve, they decrease the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution, increasing the pH.
Common bases, like sodium hydroxide, dissociate into hydroxide ions and corresponding cations in aqueous solutions.
Non-hydroxide bases, such as ammonia, accept protons from water, producing ammonium ions and hydroxide ions.
When an acid and a base are mixed, they undergo a neutralization reaction, producing salt and water. For example, an antacid, a base such as magnesium hydroxide, reacts with stomach acid to create magnesium chloride and water, relieving acid reflux.

Acids and bases play several important roles in biology. The pH of a biological system can significantly impact the function of biological molecules, including enzymes, proteins, and nucleic acids. For example, enzymes have optimal pH ranges for their activity, and changes in pH can denature or alter their structure, affecting their function. Acids and bases also play a crucial role in cellular signaling and communication. The pH of the extracellular fluid around cells can influence the activity of ion channels, which are essential for cellular communication and signaling.
Acids
An acid is a substance that releases hydrogen ions (H+) in solution. Because an atom of hydrogen has just one proton and one electron, a positively charged hydrogen ion is simply a proton. This solitary proton is highly likely to participate in chemical reactions. Strong acids are compounds that release all of their H+ in solution; that is, they ionize completely. Hydrochloric acid (HCl), which is released from cells in the lining of the stomach, is a strong acid because it releases all of its H+ in the stomach&#39;s watery environment. This strong acid helps in digestion and kills ingested microbes. Weak acids do not ionize completely; that is, some of their hydrogen ions remain bonded within a compound in solution. An example of a weak acid is vinegar or acetic acid.
Bases
A base is a substance that releases hydroxyl ions (OH-) in solution or one that accepts H+ already present in solution. The hydroxyl ions (also known as hydroxide ions) or other basic substances combine with H+ present to form a water molecule, thereby removing H+ and reducing the solution&#39;s acidity. Food mixed with hydrochloric acid from the stomach would burn the small intestine, the next portion of the digestive tract after the stomach, if it were not for the release of bicarbonate (HCO3-), a weak base that attracts H+. Bicarbonate accepts some of the H+ protons, thereby reducing the acidity of the solution.
Neutralization reactions
A neutralization reaction is a specific type of acid-base reaction in which the reactants are an acid and a base (but not water), and the products are often salt and water.
Consider what happens when a typical antacid such as milk of magnesia (an aqueous suspension of solid Mg(OH)2) is ingested to ease symptoms associated with excess stomach acid (HCl). In addition to water, this reaction produces a salt, magnesium chloride. Such reactions are of central importance to numerous natural and technological processes, ranging from the chemical transformations that take place within cells and the lakes and oceans to the industrial-scale production of fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and other substances essential to society.

Acids, bases, and pH help control how cells and body systems work. In biology, pH can strongly affect enzymes, proteins, and nucleic acids. Enzymes work best within a certain pH range, and pH changes can alter their structure or denature them, which changes how they function.

Acids release hydrogen ions, or H+, in solution. A hydrogen ion is a proton, so it is very reactive in chemical reactions. Strong acids release all of their H+ in water and ionize completely. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is a strong acid released by cells in the stomach lining. It helps digest food and kills microbes that are swallowed. Weak acids do not ionize completely. Vinegar, or acetic acid, is one example.

Bases either release hydroxyl ions, or OH-, in solution or accept H+ already present in solution. These ions or other basic substances combine with H+ to form water, which lowers acidity. Bicarbonate, or HCO3-, is a weak base that helps protect the small intestine from the hydrochloric acid that leaves the stomach. It accepts some of the H+ and reduces the solution’s acidity.

Neutralization reactions are acid-base reactions in which an acid and a base react, but water is not one of the reactants. The products are often a salt and water. A common example is milk of magnesia, which contains magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2. When it is taken to ease excess stomach acid, it reacts with HCl to form water and magnesium chloride, a salt. These reactions matter in cells, lakes, oceans, and in the industrial production of fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and other useful substances.

Understand and be prepared to use values specific to chemical processes: the mole, molar mass, molarity, and percent composition. EXPLANATION: During the early and mid-1800s, a tremendous amount of early research poured into building an understanding of the way that atoms combine. This work required analysis of the percent composition of different substances. Joseph Proust's work with tin oxides led him to publish his law of definite proportions noting that a given pure substance will have a constant ratio for the combination of elements making up the substance. Building on Proust's work, John Dalton published his law of multiple proportions and atomic theory noting that multiple patterns exist for the way that atoms combine, yet the combining atoms are invariable. Meanwhile Amedeo Avogadro hypothesizes that given equal pressures and temperatures, two equal volumes of gas will contain equal numbers of atoms. Acknowledging that the exact number of atoms was unknown in these gaseous volumes, the Latin word "mole" was used. "Mole" translates to "lump" recognizing the ambiguous quantity of gas. A number of attempts have been undertaken historically to quantify the mole. Robert Millikan's oil drop experiment revealed the change of a single electron, which could then be divided into Faraday's Constant for the charge of a mole of electrons. Dividing the charge of a mole of electrons by the charge of a single electron yields the number of electrons in a mole, $6.022\times10^{\wedge}23$. Students should be familiar with how to translate between the given quantities. Student's first use atomism/Dalton's atomic theory in third grade noting that matter is made up of particles too small to be seen. This the first time where students will undertake the process of counting these invisible particles. Electrolysis of water provides a tangible experience to demonstrate the constituent parts of water, though the definite proportions of water may not be easily seen due to the solubility of the gasses produced. The concept of relative mass can be explored by comparing small groups of like items. For example, relative masses of beans can be compared with pinto, white, and black beans. If bags are created with equal numbers of like beans, students can develop a concept of why the smallest bean will have a relative mass of 1, analogous to hydrogen.

Evaluate the relationship (qualitative and quantitatively) at STP between pressure and volume (Boyle's Law), temperature and volume (Charles' Law), temperature and pressure (Gay-Lussac Law) and moles and volume (Avogadro's Law), and evaluate and explain these relationships with respect to kinetic molecular theory. Be able to understand, establish, and predict the relationships between volume, temperature, and pressure using combined gas law both qualitatively and quantitatively. EXPLANATION: When exploring the behavior of gasses, it is important to consider experimental design. Experiments used to show the relationships between these sets of variables should include one independent and one dependent variable. Other variables should be held constant. Pressure should serve as the dependent variable because it cannot be manipulated directly. Avogadro's Law can be used to relate the amount of gas in two different containers in lieu of knowing actual number of gas particles in an individual container. Individual demonstrations can be performed to explore each of the different gas laws.
