Types of Chemical Reactions: Exchange and Reversible

In exchange reactions, two or more reactants exchange their atoms to form products.
These reactions involve both decomposition &#8212; breaking of bonds in the reactants, and synthesis &#8212; forming new bonds to create products.
For example, when a glucose molecule reacts with ATP, a phosphate group from ATP is transferred to the glucose, producing ADP and glucose 6-phosphate.
Most chemical reactions are reversible; the products can react to form the original reactants.
For instance, in blood, carbon dioxide and water react to form bicarbonate and hydrogen ions in a reversible reaction.
Here, the forward reaction, which forms the products, and the reverse reaction, which converts the products back to reactants, can achieve a state of equilibrium with no net change in the amounts of reactants and products.
In this case, the equilibrium between the two reactions helps maintain the blood pH.

An exchange reaction is a chemical reaction in which both synthesis and decomposition occur, chemical bonds are both formed and broken, and chemical energy is absorbed, stored, and released.
A special kind of exchange reaction is the oxidation-reduction reaction, or the redox reaction. These reactions involve the transfer of electrons from one compound to another. The electrons in these reactions commonly come from hydrogen atoms, which consist of an electron and a proton. A molecule gives up a hydrogen atom in the form of a hydrogen ion (H+) and an electron, breaking the molecule into smaller parts. The loss of an electron (oxidation) releases a small amount of energy; both the electron and the energy are then passed to another molecule in the process of reduction or the gaining of an electron. These two reactions always happen together, and when an electron is passed between molecules, the donor is oxidized, and the recipient is reduced. Oxidation-reduction reactions often happen in a series so that a molecule that is reduced is subsequently oxidized, passing on not only the electron it just received but also the energy it received.
In theory, any chemical reaction can proceed in either direction under the right conditions. In reversible reactions, reactants turn into products, but when the product&#39;s concentration goes beyond a certain threshold (characteristic of the particular reaction), some of these products convert back into reactants. At this point, product and reactant designations reverse. This back and forth continues until a certain relative balance between reactants and products occurs&#8212;a state called equilibrium. A chemical equation with a double-headed arrow pointing towards both the reactants and products often denotes these reversible reaction situations.
For example, in human blood, hydrogen ions (H+) bind to bicarbonate ions (HCO3-), forming an equilibrium state with carbonic acid (H2CO3).
However, biological reactions rarely obtain equilibrium because the concentrations of the reactants or products or both are constantly changing, often with one reaction&#39;s product a reactant for another. If we added carbonic acid to this system, some of it would convert to bicarbonate and hydrogen ions. When there is excess hydrogen ions in the blood, forming carbonic acid will be the reaction&#39;s major direction.

Exchange reactions and reversible reactions are two important ideas in chemistry. In an exchange reaction, synthesis and decomposition happen at the same time. Chemical bonds are both formed and broken. These reactions can absorb chemical energy, store it, and release it.

A special type of exchange reaction is the oxidation-reduction reaction, or redox reaction. In a redox reaction, electrons move from one compound to another. The electrons often come from hydrogen atoms, which contain one electron and one proton. When a molecule gives up a hydrogen atom as a hydrogen ion, H+, and an electron, it breaks into smaller parts.

Oxidation is the loss of an electron. It releases a small amount of energy. That electron and energy then move to another molecule during reduction, which is the gain of an electron. Oxidation and reduction always happen together. When the electron moves, the donor is oxidized and the recipient is reduced. These reactions often happen in a chain, so a molecule that is reduced can later be oxidized and pass on the electron and the energy it received.

Any chemical reaction can move in either direction under the right conditions. In a reversible reaction, reactants form products, but if the product concentration becomes high enough, some products change back into reactants. The reaction then reaches a balance between the two sides called equilibrium. A double-headed arrow in a chemical equation often shows this kind of reaction.

A common example is the balance in human blood between hydrogen ions, H+, and bicarbonate ions, HCO3-, which form carbonic acid, H2CO3. Biological reactions usually do not reach equilibrium because the concentrations keep changing. Often, one reaction's product becomes a reactant in another reaction. If carbonic acid is added to this system, some of it changes back into bicarbonate and hydrogen ions. When there are excess hydrogen ions in the blood, forming carbonic acid becomes the main direction of the reaction.
