States of Matter

Materie existiert in drei Hauptformen: fest, flüssig und gasförmig.
Alle Materiemoleküle haben eine bestimmte Menge an kinetischer Energie, die ihren Aggregatzustand bestimmt.
Die Moleküle von Festkörpern sind dicht gepackt, haben wenig Platz um sie herum und haben eine begrenzte Bewegung. Dadurch erhalten Festkörper eine bestimmte Form und ein bestimmtes Volumen.
Moleküle in Flüssigkeiten sind durch starke, anziehende Kräfte gebunden, so dass um sie herum wenig Platz bleibt. Dennoch haben sie genug Energie, um sich frei zu bewegen, so dass die Flüssigkeiten fließen können.
In Gasen haben die Moleküle eine hohe kinetische Energie, bewegen sich schnell aneinander vorbei und haben daher vernachlässigbare intermolekulare Kräfte. Da sie viel Platz um die Moleküle herum haben, haben Gase eine geringe Dichte, wodurch sie komprimierbar sind.
Materie kann sich von einem Zustand in einen anderen umwandeln, wenn sich Temperatur und Druck ändern.
Wenn die Temperatur steigt, können Moleküle genügend kinetische Energie gewinnen, um die intermolekularen Kräfte zu überwinden und in einen weniger geordneten Zustand überzugehen.
Wenn der Druck steigt, werden die Moleküle näher aneinander gedrückt, wodurch die intermolekularen Kräfte zunehmen und die Materie in einen geordneteren Zustand versetzt wird.

Feststoffe, Flüssigkeiten und Gase sind die drei Aggregatzustände, die auf der Erde allgemein vorkommen. Ein fester Stoff ist starr und besitzt eine bestimmte Form. Eine Flüssigkeit fließt und nimmt die Form ihres Behälters an, wobei sie jedoch eine flache oder leicht gekrümmte obere Oberfläche bildet, wenn sie von der Schwerkraft beeinflusst wird. Sowohl Flüssigkeiten als auch feste Stoffe haben Volumina, die nahezu unabhängig vom Druck sind. Ein Gas nimmt sowohl die Form als auch das Volumen seines Behälters an. Wissenschaftler haben einen vierten Materiezustand entdeckt, das Plasma, das natürlicherweise im Inneren von Sternen vorkommt. Ein Plasma ist ein gasförmiger Materiezustand, der eine beträchtliche Anzahl elektrisch geladener Teilchen enthält. Das Vorhandensein dieser geladenen Teilchen verleiht Plasmen einzigartige Eigenschaften, die ihre Klassifizierung als eigener Aggregatzustand neben Gasen rechtfertigen. Außer in Sternen kommen Plasmen auch in einigen anderen Hochtemperaturumgebungen (sowohl natürlicher als auch künstlicher Natur) vor, beispielsweise bei Blitzeinschlägen, bestimmten Fernsehbildschirmen und speziellen Analyseinstrumenten, die zum Nachweis von Spuren von Metallen verwendet werden. Manchmal weisen Proben von Materie gleichzeitig eine oder mehrere Eigenschaften von Feststoffen, Flüssigkeiten und Gasen auf. Dies kann auftreten, wenn die Probe aus vielen kleinen Stücken besteht. Wir können zum Beispiel Sand gießen, als wäre er eine Flüssigkeit, weil er aus vielen kleinen festen Sandkörnern besteht. Materie kann auch Eigenschaften mehrerer Zustände haben, wenn es sich um ein Gemisch handelt, wie zum Beispiel bei Wolken. Wolken scheinen sich ein wenig wie Gase zu verhalten, sie sind jedoch Gemische aus Luft (Gas) und winzigen Wasserpartikeln (flüssig oder fest). Die Unterschiede in den Eigenschaften eines Feststoffs, einer Flüssigkeit oder eines Gases spiegeln die Stärke der Anziehungskräfte zwischen den Atomen, Molekülen oder Ionen wider, aus denen jede Phase besteht. Die Existenzphase einer Substanz hängt von der relativen Ausdehnung ihrer intermolekularen Kräfte (IMFs) und der kinetischen Energie (KE) der Moleküle ab. Teilchen in einem Feststoff sind eng zusammengepackt und oft in einem regelmäßigen Muster angeordnet. In einer Flüssigkeit sind sie dicht beieinander, jedoch ohne regelmäßige Anordnung. In einem Gas sind sie weit voneinander entfernt und ohne regelmäßige Anordnung. Teilchen in einem Festkörper schwingen um feste Positionen und bewegen sich im Allgemeinen nicht relativ zueinander. In einer Flüssigkeit bewegen sie sich aneinander vorbei, bleiben aber in ständigem Kontakt. In einem Gas bewegen sie sich unabhängig voneinander, außer wenn sie kollidieren. Solids, liquids, gases, and plasma are the main forms of matter described here. Solids are rigid and keep a definite shape. Liquids flow and take the shape of their container, although gravity gives the surface a flat or slightly curved top. Solids and liquids also have volumes that stay nearly the same even when pressure changes.

Gases behave differently from solids and liquids. A gas takes both the shape and the volume of its container. In matter with this behavior, the particles are far apart and do not stay in regular positions.

Plasma is a fourth state of matter. It is a gaseous state that contains many electrically charged particles. Because of these charges, plasma has properties that are different from ordinary gases. Plasma occurs naturally in the interiors of stars and can also be found in lightning strikes, some television screens, and special analytical instruments that detect trace metals.

Some materials can seem to show more than one state at once. Sand can be poured like a liquid because it is made of many small solid grains. Clouds also mix different states, since they contain air as a gas along with tiny water particles that may be liquid or solid.

The state of a substance depends on the balance between intermolecular forces and kinetic energy. Intermolecular forces are the attractions between atoms, molecules, or ions, and kinetic energy is the motion of the particles. In a solid, particles are tightly packed and often arranged in a regular pattern. They vibrate in fixed positions rather than moving past one another. In a liquid, particles stay close together with no regular arrangement. They move past each other while remaining in constant contact. In a gas, particles are far apart, move independently, and only interact when they collide.
