Introduction to Chemical Reactions

Eine chemische Reaktion ist ein Prozess, bei dem Atome in einer oder mehreren Substanzen, die als Reaktanten bekannt sind, ihre Anordnung ändern, indem sie ihre chemischen Bindungen aufbrechen und neue Bindungen bilden, um die Produkte zu erzeugen.
Reaktionen, die zu einer Nettofreisetzung von Energie führen, sind exergonisch, während endergonische Reaktionen Nettoabsorber von Energie sind.
Die biochemischen Reaktionen, die im menschlichen Körper ablaufen, werden entweder als Synthese oder anabol kategorisiert, wie z. B. Proteinsynthese, Zersetzung oder katabol, wie der Abbau von Polysacchariden in Einfachzucker, oder Austauschreaktionen, wie die Übertragung von ATP-Phosphat auf Glukose, um Glukose-Phosphat zu bilden.

Alle chemischen Reaktionen beginnen mit einem Edukt, dem allgemeinen Begriff für eine oder mehrere Substanzen, die an der Reaktion beteiligt sind. Natrium- und Chloridionen sind zum Beispiel die Edukte bei der Produktion von Kochsalz. Eine oder mehrere Substanzen, die durch eine chemische Reaktion entstehen, werden als Produkt bezeichnet. Chemische Reaktionen folgen dem Gesetz der Massenerhaltung, was bedeutet, dass in einer chemischen Reaktion keine Materie erzeugt oder zerstört werden kann. Die Bestandteile der Edukte - die Anzahl der Atome und die Elemente - sind alle in dem Produkt(en) vorhanden. Ebenso gibt es in den Produkten nichts, was nicht in den Edukten vorhanden ist. 

 Chemische Reaktionen erfordern ausreichend Energie, um die Materie mit genügend Präzision und Kraft kollidieren zu lassen, um alte chemische Bindungen aufzubrechen und neue zu bilden. Im Allgemeinen ist kinetische Energie die Energieform, die jegliche Art von bewegter Materie antreibt. Potenzielle Energie ist die Positionsenergie oder die Energie, die die Materie aufgrund der Positionierung oder Struktur ihrer Bestandteile besitzt. Alle Atome haben kinetische Energie, da sie ständig in Bewegung sind. Die Energie, die benötigt wird, um die chemischen Bindungen der Edukte zu brechen und eine Reaktion zu starten, wird Aktivierungsenergie genannt. Die Konzentration und Temperatur der Edukte können die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit einer chemischen Reaktion beeinflussen. 

 Die Konvention zum Schreiben chemischer Gleichungen sieht vor, dass die Reaktantenformeln auf der linken Seite eines Reaktionspfeils und die Produktformeln auf der rechten Seite stehen. Gemäß dieser Konvention und den Definitionen von „Edukt„ und „Produkt„ repräsentiert eine chemische Gleichung die Reaktion von links nach rechts. Reversible Reaktionen können jedoch sowohl in Vorwärtsrichtung (links nach rechts) als auch in Rückwärtsrichtung (rechts nach links) ablaufen. Wenn die Geschwindigkeiten der Vorwärts- und Rückwärtsreaktionen gleich sind, bleiben die Konzentrationen der Edukt- und Produktarten im Laufe der Zeit konstant und das System befindet sich im Gleichgewicht. Die relativen Konzentrationen von Edukten und Produkten in Gleichgewichtssystemen variieren stark. Einige Systeme enthalten hauptsächlich Produkte im Gleichgewicht, einige hauptsächlich Edukte und einige nennenswerte Mengen von beidem.

 Zum Beispiel binden im menschlichen Blut überschüssige Wasserstoffionen (H+) an Bicarbonationen (HCO3-), um einen Gleichgewichtszustand mit Kohlensäure (H2CO3) zu bilden. Wenn wir Kohlensäure zu diesem System hinzufügen würden, würde sich ein Teil davon in Bicarbonat und Wasserstoffionen umwandeln.

 Biologische Reaktionen erreichen jedoch selten ein Gleichgewicht, da sich die Konzentrationen der Edukte oder Produkte oder beider ständig ändern, oft mit dem Produkt einer Reaktion als Edukt für eine andere. Um auf das Beispiel der überschüssigen Wasserstoffionen im Blut zurückzukommen, ist die Bildung von Kohlensäure die Hauptrichtung der Reaktion. Die Kohlensäure kann jedoch auch den Körper als Kohlendioxidgas (über das Ausatmen) verlassen, anstatt sich in Bicarbonation zurückzuverwandeln. Dies treibt die Reaktion nach rechts gemäß dem Massenwirkungsgesetz. Diese Reaktionen sind wichtig für die Aufrechterhaltung der Homöostase in unserem Blut.

Chemical reactions start with reactants and end with products. Reactants are the substances that enter a reaction, and products are the new substances that form. For example, sodium and chloride ions are the reactants in the formation of table salt.

Chemical reactions follow the law of conservation of mass. Matter is not created or destroyed during the reaction. That means the atoms and elements in the reactants are still present in the products, and nothing new appears in the products that was not already in the reactants.

Energy is needed to start many reactions. Collisions between particles must happen with enough force and precision to break old chemical bonds and form new ones. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, while potential energy is the energy that comes from position or structure. Atoms always have kinetic energy because they are always moving. The energy needed to break the bonds of the reactants and begin the reaction is called activation energy.

Reaction rate can change with concentration and temperature. Chemical equations show reactants on the left side of an arrow and products on the right side. This convention shows the reaction moving from left to right. Some reactions are reversible, so they can also move from right to left.

In a reversible reaction, equilibrium happens when the forward and reverse reaction rates are equal. At that point, the concentrations of reactants and products stay constant over time. Some equilibrium systems contain mostly products, some contain mostly reactants, and some contain significant amounts of both. In human blood, excess hydrogen ions bind to bicarbonate ions to form carbonic acid. If carbonic acid is added, some of it changes back into bicarbonate and hydrogen ions.

Biological reactions often do not reach equilibrium because the concentrations of reactants and products keep changing. In many cases, one reaction’s product becomes a reactant for another reaction. In the blood example, carbonic acid can also leave the body as carbon dioxide gas during exhalation instead of changing back. This pulls the reaction to the right by the law of mass action and helps maintain homeostasis in the blood.
