Elastomeric Culture Dish

An elastomeric culture dish is a flexible cell-culture platform made from an elastic polymer, providing a deformable substrate for growing and studying cells in bioengineering. Its mechanical behavior can be adjusted through material composition, thickness, or applied strain, while cell adhesion sites transmit substrate deformation to the cytoskeleton and associated signaling pathways. These dishes enable researchers to examine how cells sense and respond to stiffness, stretching, and other physical cues, supporting studies of mechanobiology, tissue engineering, cell differentiation, and disease modeling. By more closely reproducing dynamic mechanical environments than rigid cultureware, they help connect material design with cellular function.

Cultured muscle cells are an inadequate model to recapitulate innervated muscle in vivo. A functional motor unit can be reproduced in vitro by innervation of differentiated human primary muscle cells using rat embryo spinal cord explants. This article describes how co-cultures of spinal cord explants and muscle cells are established.

The assay describes a rapid means to measure early biofilm formation in bacteria and fungi. This method uses a microtiter plate as the substratum for microbial biofilm formation, and the biofilm is visualized using crystal violet strain. The assay provides either a qualitative or quantitative assay for early biofilm formation.
