Mustard Aphid Control

Mustard aphid control is the integrated management of aphid populations that infest mustard and related Brassica crops, helping protect plant growth, yield, and seed production. Aphids use piercing-sucking mouthparts to remove phloem sap, so control relies on field scouting, threshold-based decisions, cultural practices, conservation of natural enemies such as lady beetles and parasitoid wasps, and selective insecticides when needed. In biology and crop protection, this approach illustrates plant–herbivore interactions, population regulation, and integrated pest management while helping reduce insecticide resistance and protect beneficial organisms. These strategies support more sustainable mustard production and provide a framework for managing other sap-feeding agricultural pests.

This protocol presents an optimized detached-leaf bioassay system for evaluating the effectiveness of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) against the mustard aphid (Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.)), a parthenogenetic insect. The method outlines the data collection process during Petri dish experiments, enabling researchers to consistently measure the virulence of EPF against mustard aphids and other parthenogenetic insects.

Aphids are effective transmitters of plant viruses. Aphid microinjection of virus, the procedure we will show you today, is a technique allowing researchers to inject virus directly into the hemocoel of the aphid, bypassing the gut, one of the 2 major barriers for virus transmission in a circulative manner. The same technique is also used to inject dsRNA for RNAi.

Identification of Critical Conditions for Immunostaining in the Pea Aphid Embryos: Increasing Tissue Permeability and Decreasing Background Staining

A protocol of whole-mount immunostaining on aphid embryos is presented, in which critical conditions for decreasing background staining and increasing tissue permeability are addressed. These conditions are specifically developed for effective detection of protein expression in the embryonic tissues of aphids.

Control System Problem

In an open-loop system, such as a basic thermostat, the poles of the transfer function influence the system's response but do not determine its stability. However, when feedback is introduced to form a closed-loop system, such as an advanced thermostat that adjusts heating based on room temperature, stability is governed by the new poles of the closed-loop transfer function. When forming a closed-loop system, issues can arise if the poles cross into the unstable region, leading to potential...
