Perinatal Embryo Collection

Perinatal embryo collection is a biological sampling method used to recover embryos or late-stage conceptuses near birth for developmental analysis. Researchers use timed breeding and carefully staged pregnancies to identify the collection window, then isolate conceptuses from the reproductive tract and preserve embryonic tissues, extraembryonic membranes, or associated fluids for examination. The collected material supports studies of organ formation, growth, gene expression, congenital abnormalities, and responses to genetic or environmental factors. By linking precise developmental timing with tissue-level observations and molecular assays, this approach helps clarify how normal development proceeds and how disruptions during late gestation contribute to disease.

Protocols for studying the embryonic and perinatal murine aorta using in vivo clonal analysis and fate mapping, aortic explants, and isolated smooth muscle cells are detailed here. These diverse approaches facilitate the investigation of the morphogenesis of the embryonic and perinatal aorta in normal development and the pathogenesis in disease.
