Acute Exacerbations

Acute exacerbations are sudden, clinically significant worsenings of a chronic disease that exceed a patient’s usual symptom pattern and may require urgent adjustment of care. They occur when triggers such as infection, inflammation, environmental exposure, or treatment interruption disrupt disease control, producing increased symptoms and measurable changes in organ function. In clinical practice, recognizing an exacerbation requires comparison with baseline status, focused examination, and appropriate testing to assess severity and identify reversible causes. Early intervention can restore control, prevent complications and hospitalization, and guide longer-term strategies for monitoring, trigger reduction, medication optimization, and prevention of recurrence.

We describe a non-invasive imaging method for distinguishing inflammatory stages. Systemic delivery of luminol reveals areas of acute inflammation dependent upon MPO activity in neutrophils. In contrast, injection of lucigenin allows for visualization of chronic inflammation dependent upon Phox activity in macrophages.
